Leeds Beckett Sports Journalism students help cover Rugby League World Cup events
The students have interviewed players, coaches, and notable former players from a selection of nations competing in the competition as part of their studies.
More than 60 first year and second year students were on hand to work as the only recognised media for England Knights’ Women’s Team’s first-ever competitive fixture, taking on the Cook Islands to help prepare the visitors for the World Cup.
The group were supported by England Rugby League’s media team, who provided students the opportunity to interview players from both teams pre-game, capture content during the game and ask questions to coaches and players in the post-match press conference.
Several students were also able to get pitch access to capture the Cook Islands traditional Haka pre-game.

Sports Journalism Course Leader Dr Taylor Umland said:
“This was a totally unique experience for our students to be part of and I’m incredibly proud of what they were able to accomplish during a fantastic occasion.
“The students had to adapt to their surroundings, get used to interviewing and researching athletes in a sport that many did not know before and, more importantly, this opportunity really showed what our students are capable of in this type of environment.”
“I would like to thank Andrew Donnelly, David Rotherham, and the entire England Rugby League and Cook Islands Rugby League teams for this incredible opportunity and their support, all of the students have been overwhelmingly positive about the experience and it is one that we will all remember for a very long time.”
Sports journalism students work with Jamaica Rugby League
Before the start of the men’s tournament, a select group of Sports Journalism students were also invited to Headingley Stadium to perform media work with Jamaica Rugby League as part of their press day.
Students were able to capture content with and interview several players, including Leeds Beckett University graduates and former students including Huddersfield Giants star Ashton Golding.
