Leeds Beckett University Professor Nikos Stavropoulos to present his inaugural lecture on compositional practices in music.
In his inaugural lecture, Nikos Stavropoulos, Professor of Composition at Leeds Beckett University, will explore the notion of aural micro-space in compositional practice and how the latest recording technology can be used to create sound otherwise inaccessible to the listener.
This event offers music and composition enthusiasts in Leeds a unique opportunity to get inspired by Professor Nikos Stavropoulos and his work in electroacoustic music.
As part of his inaugural lecture, he will present ECHOCHROMA XX on Friday 28 April, a concert at Leeds Beckett University that will feature a selection of diverse compositions for voice, piano, percussion, and string quartet through a three-dimensional speaker array, creating an immersive listening experience.
The lecture and concert are presented as part of the LEEDS 2023’s Season One: Awakening showcase.
Professor Nikos Stavropoulos, Professor of Composition at Leeds School of Arts, said: "Creating and articulating acoustic space has been at the forefront of creative practice in electronic music since the early days of Musique Concrète in Paris and Elektronische Music in Cologne in the 1950s.
‘’The ongoing development of new immersive sound technologies and techniques - from spherical auditoria in the 1970s to the proliferation of higher order Ambisonics more recently - create a completely new situation for musical experience. Join me to explore the world of immersive sound and to encounter a rare treat of new three-dimensional music."
Nikos is a composer of acousmatic and mixed music. His multi-award-winning music is performed and broadcast regularly around the world. His practice focuses on notions of immersivity in electroacoustic music.
In 2006 he joined the Music, Sound and Performance Group at Leeds Beckett University. He is a founding member of the Echochroma New Music Research Group, a member of the British ElectroAcoustic Network (BEAN), and the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association (HELMCA).
This lecture is part of Leeds Beckett University's Inaugural Professorial Lecture Series.
Leeds Beckett University is a Principal Education Partner of LEEDS 2023, playing an active role in the year of culture that will showcase the city’s creative industries and communities.
