Summan Malik praises lecturers and work placement team for supporting her through her studies
Following her degree, she worked as a Health Coach for two years delivering the National Diabetes Education Programme and then Diabetes Support Education. She decided that her next step would be to complete a master's to build on her knowledge, so she returned to university and did her MSc in Nutrition in Practice.
During her time at Leeds Beckett, she found the lecturers and work placement team to be very supportive. She chose to study at LBU because the course is accredited, and the modules are more focused on nutrition and health. She also liked the student vibes that Leeds offered and how it was representative of different cultures.
She says her degree helped her learn the technical knowledge needed to deliver nutritional advice as well as the team working skills needed for working as part of a multidisciplinary team, and it also helped her build up the confidence around the care she is delivering.
During her studies she had several placements, including one during her MSc at Heart Research UK. Here she supported with proof-reading dietary information, was part of a panel for a community grant, and shared ideas based on past experiences of working as a health coach.
Summan is now working as a Health and Wellbeing Coach for Chapeltown Primary Care Network in Leeds. She supports patients with long-term health conditions across four GP practices, and supports individuals with diabetes management, prevention of cardiovascular disease and support with weight loss to improve health outcomes. She also helps people with anxiety or depression to access mental health services and setting goals to improve their mental health.
Her advice to anyone considering studying nutrition is to try and make the most of the degree, be curious and ask questions.
