Leeds Beckett celebrates its strong working relationships with the NHS on its 75th anniversary
Many staff who teach on our health courses still work within the NHS or have links which means our students get first-hand experience of what it’s like to work in NHS settings on placements, and thousands of graduates go onto work in the NHS.
We have strong links through courses in nursing, speech and language therapy, counselling, occupational therapy, psychology, biomedical sciences, nutrition and dietetics, health promotion, and physiotherapy. Over 3500 nurses have been trained at Leeds Beckett since 1992.
In 2019, Professor Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University (LBU), signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, which stated a commitment to collaborate on research projects and co-develop joint academic and clinical posts.
At the time, Professor Slee said: “LBU and Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust are part of the Leeds Anchors network. Our partnership underlines our commitment to improving health outcomes for people here in Leeds.”
Dr Yvette Oade, Chief Medical Officer at Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are greatly looking forward to furthering our partnership working with Leeds Beckett University to ensure we maximise clinical research opportunities for our patients, staff and partners.
"This agreement underlines our commitment to improving patient care by putting research and innovation at the heart of all we do at LTHT."
Leeds Beckett conducts a variety of specialist research related to health and wellbeing, including physical activity and obesity, dementia, and antibiotic resistance.
In order to provide the best facilities for students studying health-related courses, Leeds Beckett opened state-of—the-art clinical skills suite and biomedical science laboratory earlier this year.
The Clinical Skills Suite creates an authentic learning and practise environment for students across nursing, allied health professions (including occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and dietetics and speech and language therapy), sport and exercise therapy, and wider health courses. The space houses two ten-bed hospital wards and a fully immersive three-bedroom hospital simulation space housing three simulation manikins. It provides a flexible teaching space which accommodates an anatomy study space with a life-size virtual dissection table, and a built-in community living suite for simulation and practise in a home-like environment.
The biomedical science lab is used to carry out research into diseases including cancer and diabetes, as well as looking at antimicrobial resistance. It houses specialist equipment that enables undergraduate and postgraduate students to engage with cutting-edge research. This includes the latest technologies, such as imaging flow cytometry (used to analyse characteristics of cells and particles) and Real-Time PCR (used to determine the expression level of target genes).
