Leeds Beckett academic selected for new social care research role
Professor Claire Surr, who leads the university’s Centre for Dementia Research, has been chosen to chair the brand-new National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), Research Programme for Social Care funding panel, following a formal application process.
The NIHR works in partnership with NHS, universities, local government, research funders, patients and the public. They fund, enable and deliver world-leading health and social care research that improves people’s health and wellbeing and promotes economic growth.
Professor Surr says she welcomes the opportunities this new research programme brings: “I’m excited to be part of this new programme and I’m looking forward to working with the NIHR on commission research that will make a real difference to those accessing and providing social care. The Research Programme for Social Care funding will hopefully increase the volume of social care research currently being conducted in the UK as well as growing the numbers of social care organisations that take part in and benefit from this research.”
Professor Martin Knapp – Programme Director at NIHR commented: “The new Research Programme for Social Care is a substantial investment by NIHR. The funding panel plays a major role in ensuring that the best research gets commissioned, and I am absolutely delighted that Professor Surr has accepted the key position of panel chair.”
Social care research can be related to all types of personal and practical care and assistance. Social care can be provided to adults and children who may be vulnerable, who need support because of physical disabilities/illnesses, learning disabilities, cognitive disabilities and mental health problems, or who are in need or extra support for other reasons.
