Lioness Lucy Bronze MBE to be recognised with honorary doctorate from Leeds Beckett University
The award recognises Lucy's achievements as a professional footballer for over a decade, during which she has won the UEFA Women's Euro 2022 and reached the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Final. Lucy was also named World Player of the Year in 2020 and European Player of the Year in 2019.
Having played for some of the most notable clubs in English football including Manchester City, Everton and Liverpool, Lucy has also represented Great Britain at the Olympics and has 121 caps for England.
Lucy is an alumna of Leeds Beckett, having graduated with a degree in Sports Science in 2013 while she was still competing with Everton and Liverpool.
On returning to receive her honorary doctorate, Lucy Bronze MBE said: "I am delighted to be receiving an honorary award from Leeds Beckett University, just over a decade after being a student at the university. Many things have changed for both me and the university since then, and I am very proud to be returning to not only celebrate my personal achievements, but the achievements of others and the university."
Alongside her sporting achievements, Lucy has used her platform to promote better mental health, gender equality and call for an end to online hate in football. Last year Lucy was presented with an MBE for her services to football.
Professor Peter Slee, Leeds Beckett University Vice Chancellor said: "It is with great pleasure that I congratulate Lucy Bronze MBE on behalf of all students, colleagues and governors here at Leeds Beckett University.
"The Carnegie School of Sport has a reputation for producing world-leading research and innovation in the field of Sports Science. With over 1,000 students from the school graduating this year, we are proud to attract and nurture the next generation of elite athletes who will follow Lucy's example to become global competitors."
Lucy Bronze MBE will receive her honorary doctorate during Leeds Beckett's graduation week in July, where over 7,500 students and nearly 29,000 guests will attend ceremonies. Over 11,000 students will graduate from the university this summer.
