Leadership in Crisis
04 February 2025
Elgar Encyclopedia of Leadership Edward Elgar Publishing
Pereira V, Slee PRH, Rizomyliotis ILeadership in crisis refers to guiding organisations through unexpected, high-pressure situations. Historically, effective crisis leadership has been crucial during pivotal moments, requiring rapid decision-making, effective communication, and maintaining morale. Traditional leadership theories have evolved to include crisis-specific competencies, emphasising resilience, emotional intelligence, and ethical considerations. Modern challenges, such as global pandemics and economic instability, highlight the necessity for leaders who can balance decisiveness with empathy and long-term strategic thinking. As crises become more complex, leadership approaches must adapt, leveraging technology and fostering resilience to navigate future challenges successfully.
