Professor Silke Machold presenting at the Research and Knowledge Exchange Awards

Professor Silke Machold

Professor Silke Machold, Pro Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation at LBU delivered a session on research integrity - what this is, why it is so important, and an overview of what we are doing here at LBU to support colleagues, including becoming signatories of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA).

Our Knowledge Exchange team presented a session on collaboration, partnerships and policy work - including an introduction to the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF), the Knowledge Exchange business hub and our Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) programme.

Our annual Research and Knowledge Exchange festival is a hugely important event for the university. It is a chance to come together to not only celebrate and share the examples of excellent work taking place across LBU, but also to make new connections, learn from each other and develop new skills. It is an integral part of our journey to create an inclusive, inspiring and collaborative research culture that we can all be proud of.

Day two began with a presentation from the Social Communications agency, with colleagues. The team shared insight from a collaborative project which has led to the creation of three core research themes:

  • Greener and Sustainable Communities
  • Sport and Healthy Communities
  • Inclusive and Prosperous Communities

These show how we are responding to the big global challenges we are facing, and how we are doing things differently through our communities, co-production, inclusion and impact approach.

The team shared insight to help us shape the stories of our university's research and knowledge exchange activities. A bank of tools and resources will soon be available to all colleagues - including case studies and stories from across our schools and interdisciplinary areas, which will bring to life the impact that our research and knowledge exchange is having and show our key messages in action.

We then heard from three academic colleagues at LBU to represent each research theme: Professor Persephone Sextou, Professor Nnenna Ifeanyi-Ajufo and Dr Jim Parker. The varied and impactful research spanned bringing theatre and arts to children's hospital wards, working with the UN Convention on Cybercrime, and the policy-informing work of the Leeds Sustainability Institute (LSI).

In the afternoon, we celebrated our first Research and Knowledge Exchange Awards event. Colleagues and postgraduate research students gathered to learn more about the fantastic work taking place across the University and celebrate our outstanding winners and nominees. You can read more about the work and achievements of our Awards nominees on our Research and Enterprise blog.
