If you need support, get in touch before 19 December
Top three budgeting tips
1. Set and review a budget
A simple budget plan is the best way to stay on top of your spending. Use a template that works for you and review it regularly. Our budgeting resources can help.
2. Cut discretionary costs
You can't change rent or essential bills, but you can reduce extras - switch to a cheaper phone contract or cancel unused subscriptions. Please view more information on tips on food, energy, fashion, travel, repair and reuse.
3. Maximise student perks
Use student discounts, interest-free overdrafts and deals - but importantly, avoid buying things solely because they’re on offer. Please view more information on latest savings across the UK via Money Saving Expert.
If you're struggling
Check you're getting all the funding you’re entitled to
Make sure that you are getting all the correct funding available - some students miss out on the correct Maintenance Loan, benefits or council tax exemptions. Our Money Advice team can review this with you.
Consider a student bank account
Interest-free overdrafts are usually safer than credit cards or payday loans. Please view more information via Money Saving Expert.
Look into Leeds Beckett University support
We offer bursaries for care-experienced and estranged students, and primary carers, plus a Hardship Fund for those in financial difficulty. Please view more information on our Funding from Leeds Beckett.
Planning for next semester
You'll already know some key figures, such as:
- Your next student loan instalment
- Rent or accommodation payments
- Regular bills and contracts
- Income from work or benefits
Work out what you need for essentials, then spread any remaining discretionary spending across the term. Try to keep a small buffer for unexpected costs.
Unipol provide excellent advice on getting the right property for you and understanding costs.
Stay scam aware
Students are often targeted by scams. Before sending money or sharing personal details, take a moment to pause and think. Scams can include:
- Fake rental properties
- Requests for upfront 'fees'
- Fake job offers requiring payment for 'training' or 'equipment'
- Money muling (illegal, even if you think it’s harmless)
The Take Five campaign has great advice. Please also view more information on money muling.
Support over the festive period
Leeds Beckett University will be closed between 19 December and 5 January, which means the Money Advice team won't be able to provide support during this period.
If you think you'll need help, please get in touch before 19 December, so we can offer advice or assess any funding requests ahead of the closure.
