Leeds Beckett University awards Honorary Doctorate to legal leader and diversity champion Lubna Shuja
Born and educated in Yorkshire, Lubna has built a distinguished legal career founded on a commitment to justice. After qualifying as a solicitor in 1992, she developed a successful practice while supporting small firms, sole practitioners and aspiring lawyers. Throughout her career, she has worked to create opportunities for others, particularly those from backgrounds historically underrepresented within the legal profession.
In 2022, Lubna made history when she became the 178th President of the Law Society of England and Wales. In the organisations near 200-year history, she was the first Asian, the first Muslim and only the seventh woman to hold the office - marking a significant milestone for the legal profession.
Under her leadership, the Law Society strengthened its support for lawyers facing complex ethical challenges, reinforcing the importance of trust, accountability and professionalism in the practice of law.
Professor Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor at Leeds Beckett University, says:
“Lubna Shuja has made an exceptional contribution to the legal profession through her leadership, integrity and commitment to inclusion. As a trailblazer and role model, she has helped shape a more representative profession while championing the highest ethical standards in legal practice. Her influence has been felt nationally and internationally, and her dedication to supporting future generations makes her a truly deserving recipient of this Honorary Doctorate.”
Receiving the award, Lubna Shuja says:
“I am deeply honoured to receive this award from Leeds Beckett University. Throughout my career, I have been passionate about promoting fairness, inclusion and ethical practice. It is a privilege to be recognised in this way. I hope my journey encourages others to pursue their ambitions and help create positive change within their professions and communities.”
Lubna’s influence has extended beyond the United Kingdom. Working closely with legal and governmental leaders in India, she played a significant role in opening the Indian legal services market to solicitors from England and Wales. This landmark achievement created new opportunities for legal collaboration and strengthened professional relationships between two major legal jurisdictions.
Alongside her work in legal practice and professional leadership, Lubna has dedicated the last 18 years to professional regulation. Through chairing hearings for professional regulators, she has helped ensure high ethical standards are maintained across professions, making decisions that protect the public and uphold confidence in professional practice.
A committed mentor, speaker and advocate, Lubna has consistently supported future generations entering the profession. Her career serves as an inspiring example of how determination, resilience and a commitment to serving others can break down barriers and create opportunities for those who follow.
