Beckett's women's teams to feature in special BUCS Girl Can Week
Beckett’s women’s sports teams are set for cup action in a special BUCS Girl Can Week round with Carnegie Sport providing exclusive coverage of the teams playing on campus this week.
BUCS Girl Can celebrates women’s participation in sport and fitness and will see Beckett’s female sports teams take centre stage on Wednesday.
Beckett has more than 2,280 female Sport & Active Lifestyles members, including over 1,800 female students, participating in regular exercise and fitness activities at the university.
Beckett students can exercise in the university’s gyms, take part in fitness classes and play sport recreationally with no commitment through Beckett’s turn up and play sessions, which are free for all students to get involved with this week.
The university offers opportunities for students and staff looking to take their first step on their fitness journeys through Beckett’s lifestyle courses and wellbeing programmes. The university also works closely with the city’s sporting and fitness organisations, Active Leeds and Sports Leeds to help increase wider participation in physical activity across the city.
Leeds Beckett’s Head of Sport & Active Lifestyles Sally Nickson said: “Leeds Beckett is supporting the ambition of Leeds to be ‘The best city in England to be active…’, so we are delighted to continue to provide extensive opportunities for our students and the wider Leeds Beckett community to be physically active. “
The university has over 600 female students competing in sport, with many of Beckett’s sports club members trying their sports for the first time, such as members of Beckett’s cricket, rugby union and rowing clubs.
The university has also seen many of its elite female athletes compete on the world stage in multiple sports including athletics, handball, lacrosse, netball, rugby league, tchoukball and triathlon.

Leeds Beckett Club Development Officer Jo Mannion has praised the university’s reputation for developing female sports stars and the opportunities it provides sportswomen and athletes at all levels.
Jo said “Leeds Beckett has always had an excellent reputation for attracting and developing female sporting talent, from world champion Emily Scarratt to Paralympian Kadeena Cox.”
“However, you don't have to be an Olympian to join a Beckett sports club and it's great to see so many of our female students taking up a new sport when they arrive at university.”
If you’re interested in playing for sport at Leeds Beckett there’s still time to join, with several clubs still looking for new members, whether you have played the sport before or if you’re looking to try a something new.
Jo said “Lots of our clubs are still looking for female members to join their teams so we would love to hear from any girls interested in playing sport at Beckett.”
