Film graduate teams up with rugby legends for new show
Rory Child, who graduated in Film & Moving Image Production from Leeds Met in 2010, spent two and a half months filming in Glasgow to produce 'School of Hard Knocks', a series which follows a group of local unemployed men lacking in motivation. The show is presented by rugby legends, Scott Quinnell and Will Greenwood, who teach the men rugby and interview skills before trying to get them jobs at the end of the six weeks.
Rory commented: "You can really change people's lives on this show and it's really rewarding as you witness a change of attitude in the recruits. Obviously we do have some issues along the way that need addressing but that's why we have a team of experts involved, including psychologist Paul Boross.
"It's been fantastic working with Scott Quinnell and Will Greenwood. They are two of the biggest rugby sports personalities. Their dynamic partnership is great on screen and they put a lot into making the show a success, including calling upon their contacts to attend the jobs fair at the end of the show where the boys try to get themselves jobs."
Rory held a part-time job at Sky Sports whilst studying at Leeds Met and was offered a full-time job with them in the rugby department on his graduation. Since leaving university, he has worked on many outside broadcasts including the Heineken Cup final in Dublin and England's victory over New Zealand last autumn at Twickenham.
Rory added: "The Northern Film School at Leeds Met was great preparation for working in the industry. The best bit about it is you gain an understanding of every department within the industry: so, for example, if you know what an editor wants it'll make you a better cameraman. I specialised in cinematography in my final year so I will always think more about how I'm going to shoot the next project and give advice to my colleagues.
"My advice to current film students is to look for work whilst you're still in education. It shows you're keen. Don't be put off by working for free - the more experience you gain the more employable you are. But always do what you enjoy!"
