Leeds Met to host summer school for international students
The eight-day event, jointly hosted by Leeds Met's School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality and the Institute for Tourism Studies in Macao, China, will get underway on Monday 1 July and will include a diverse series of lectures and workshops with academics, tourism professionals and policy makers.
In addition the summer school will incorporate an itinerary of social activities, showcasing the best of Yorkshire, including trips to the National Railway Museum, York, Saltaire, the Royal Armouries, Leeds City Museum, Bradford Media Museum and a visit to the Bronte Parsonage Museum and Haworth.
Julian Meinardi, who has just completed the final year of a BSc (Hons) in International Tourism Management at Leeds Metropolitan, has been sponsored by the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality, to take part in the programme.
He said: "This will be a very exciting experience for me and for the students who are travelling over to Yorkshire and I look forward to being able to share my knowledge of tourism and my love for this historic county."
Sofia Rebelo, Course Leader of Leeds Met's BSc (Hons) Hospitality Leadership and Management course, has set up and organised the summer school programme.
She commented: "The Institute for Tourism Studies in Macao have partnerships with universities all over the world, so we are delighted that they selected Leeds Metropolitan University for their 2013 trip.
"We want all of the international students and staff attending to get a real flavour of Yorkshire and the fantastic facilities and opportunities we offer at Leeds Met. We will be hosting the lecture series and workshops at both our Headingley and City Campus, as well as at Headingley Carnegie Pavilion.
"There will also be work for the students to do as part of the programme and on the final day they will give group presentations which will be assessed."
The international students attending are undergraduates from the Institute for Tourism Studies, Macao; Macau University of Science and Technology, Matsumo University, Japan and City University of Hong Kong.
