Leeds Met victorious at Varsity 2013
Leeds Met teams dominated their city neighbours, The University of Leeds in the annual one-day event which saw over 1,500 students compete in over 50 fixtures at both university campuses. Following last year's over Varsity draw, Leeds Met were keen to re-establish their sporting dominance and recorded an overall score of 37.5 to 17.5 over the day's events.
Record crowds of supporters turned up at Headingley Campus, The Edge and Weetwood Sports Park to support both sides and the support certainly wasn't dampened by the inclement weather.
Our University teams pulled off some impressive victories including clean sweeps in all 8 football fixtures and all 4 netball fixtures. One of the most notable and exciting victories of the day was the women's lacrosse, a hard fought battle which ended with a victory to Leeds Met women by the narrowest of margins 15-13.
The Rugby Finale at Headingley Carnegie Stadium was packed yet again with a record attendance of 11,791. Students from both universities were in fine voice supporting their teams. Leeds Met took an early lead within the first 5 minutes and dominated the first half which ended 20 points to 3. University of Leeds staged a valiant fight back in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome a very strong Leeds Met side, the final score ending 25-15. The Man of the Match and Rugby Trophy was awarded by Chairman of Carnegie and rugby legend Sir Ian McGeechan. Student Sports Representative Lisa McCormick received the Varsity trophy on behalf of our University from the Vice Chancellor of University of Leeds.
Lisa commented: "I am thrilled to see that Leeds Met has retained the title for the ninth consecutive year. The support from the students at both institutions yesterday was unrivalled. I must commend all the students on their performances yesterday, with many closely fought contests. I look forward to some repeat performances in the BUCS rematches against The University of Leeds."
