Support for colleagues with caring responsibilities

Leeds Beckett Strengthens Support for Colleagues with Caring Responsibilities

If you're balancing work with caring for a parent, partner, child, or loved one, you're not alone. At least one in five people in the workplace has caring responsibilities, and at Leeds Beckett we know this can change at any point in someone's life.

Building understanding, not just awareness

This autumn we partnered with Sherry King, founder of Sandwich Generation Support, to deliver a series of sessions designed to build understanding and support carers, or those with caring responsibilities, across the workplace.

The series included a bespoke training workshop for managers, which created a space filled with open discussion, honesty, emotion and constructive ideas. Those there shared real experiences, explored the challenges faced by working carers, and reflected on how to better support colleagues who juggle both roles.

The impact so far

  • 100% of attendees said they left feeling more confident and better informed
  • Over 50 colleagues have attended the sessions
  • A second manager workshop is scheduled for February 2026, ensuring even more colleagues can benefit. Colleagues can sign up

A huge thanks to Leeds Beckett University for leading the way, imagine the impact if every organisation did this.

This was a brilliant session. I felt like I benefitted from the session content but also came away feeling more connected to other managers.

I would recommend it to everyone with management responsibilities.

This programme has also reignited engagement within our Carers Network, which will begin meeting online again to help colleagues reconnect, share experiences, and support one another.

LBU Colleagues can find out more about our networks, including the Working Carers network.

Practical support already in place

Colleagues can explore the following guidance and policies to understand the support available:

Why this matters

  • Supporting working carers isn't just about policy, it's about creating a culture where people feel able to speak up, ask for help early, and stay well at work
  • At Leeds Beckett, caring responsibilities are recognised as part of life, and support is part of our shared responsibility
