What is the Leadership Academy?

The Leadership Academy is an employability and leadership programme aimed at students who want to develop their skills and experience in coaching, marketing, and leadership by supporting the delivery of our social sport, Athletic Union, junior and strength and conditioning programmes. There are a variety of roles available to apply for please see below for the list.

Students must have prior experience of coaching, leading or organising sports activities. Show a real passion to want to work within and develop our sporting offer and they must be keen to develop themselves by obtaining additional qualifications whilst developing their skills in a sporting environment.

Sports Activators are current students at Leeds Beckett University, who have an interest in Sport or are passionate about having an active lifestyle and are enthusiastic about developing and promoting sport and its associated experience to other students.

Activators do not need to be part of a sports club, nor do they need to have played the sport to a high level, they just need to be committed and interested in the sport they are working within, have a good understanding of the rules and getting our students engaged. Students on this programme must be interested in their further professional development, career development and enhancing their CV and employability skills.

Activators are responsible for delivering our Social Sport programme. It is expected Activators will deliver a minimum of four hours per week that will include planning and leading the sessions, social media, and promotional activities.

The Sport Activator positions that we are looking for from September 2024 are:

  • Football:
    • Five Football officials to referee, deliver and promote the social league programme.
    • One Sport Activator for Women’s social football.
  • Futsal:
    • One Sports Activator to deliver on the Futsal programme.
  • Netball:
    • Four Netball Activators/ officials to deliver and promote the social league programme.
  • Volleyball:
    • One Sports Activator to deliver and promote the social programme.
  • Table Tennis:
    • One Sports Activator to deliver and promote the social programme.
  • Badminton:
    • One Sports Activator to deliver and promote the social programme.

In return, Sports Activators will receive:

Sport and Active Lifestyles are looking for Student Marketing Ambassadors to help enhance the sporting experience at Leeds Beckett University and raise the profile of sport.

This is an excellent opportunity to gain work experience for those considering a career within sports marketing and business.

About the Role

A Student Sports Marketing Ambassador will be required to undertake a variety of tasks. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Sourcing and writing content for our members, including, newsletters, blogging and website updates.
  • Working on our social media accounts, including Facebook, and Instagram. Creating engaging and meaningful content that will inspire our audience.
  • Assisting the Sports Office staff with the promotion of major Sport and Active Lifestyle events, including the annual Varsity calendar, Freshers Fair, and Carnegie Junior programme.
  • Developing opportunities for stakeholder feedback, helping us measure the effectiveness of our services.

There are five roles available within Sport and Active Lifestyles and your application will be considered for all five of these positions during the application process. The four programme areas include:

  • Athletic Union (applicant must be available on Wednesdays)

In the gym

The strength and conditioning coaching scholarship involves supporting the coaching team with the delivery of the strength and conditioning programme. This will consist of working with the Athletic Union focus sport teams, scholarship athletes, TASS (Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme) and Athletics talent hub athletes. Additionally, the role includes supporting the delivery of the Active Beckett fitness class programmes.

In return, Strength and Conditioning coaching scholars will receive:

  • Access to clubs, teams, players, or athletes within the chosen sports as agreed by the Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.
  • Mentoring and support by accredited strength and conditioning professionals.

Juinor coaching for American Football

Each year, we offer several sports coaching opportunities to students eager to expand their coaching experience and further their development through hands-on delivery on the Carnegie Junior Sports Academy.

Applicants for coaching roles must possess prior coaching experience and/or hold a coaching certification, with a minimum of Level one or equivalent. Available sports include Athletics, Tennis, Squash, and American Football.

All coaches must be Leeds Beckett students and, depending on their level of qualification and experience, will fall into one of three tiers:

Head Coach positions

Qualified to either Level two or three standard, dependent on the sport, with prior experience leading on sessions and managing other coaches. We would also expect that the head coach can support with the mentoring and the further development of our Lead/ Coaching Scholar positions.

Lead Coach Positions

Must hold a valid level two coaching qualification from one of the sports listed above.

Coaching Scholar

Qualified to Level one standard or have a good understanding and knowledge of one of the above sports. Must be willing to obtain their coaching qualification within the first term of working with us. Will assist with sessions under the guidance and supervision of a Head or Lead coach.

  • Data Collection: Assist in the collection of performance data during training sessions and competitions using various tools and technology.

  • Statistical Analysis: Conduct statistical analysis of performance data to extract meaningful insights and trends. Collaborate with coaches to interpret data and inform training programmes.

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled in a degree programme at Leeds Beckett related to sports science, or a related field.
