Dr Tahera Aziz is an artist-researcher-educator with a longstanding creative and socio-political interest in identity, migration and racism, examining how contemporary and historical events arising as a result of migration impact on the individual to shape their identity and experiences. She has harnessed creative technologies to investigate social injustice issues, latterly focusing on the racially motivated murder of Stephen Lawrence and the potential of spatialised audio as a medium for storytelling.

With support from the Centre for Race, Education and Decoloniality, and working closely with artist-curator Gary Stewart of Dubmorphology, Azizis developing an arts-based learning programme for secondary schools to accompany the exhibition of [re]locate in Leeds and London in 2023. [re]locate is an immersive, multi-speaker sound installation revisiting the tragic events surrounding the murder of Stephen Lawrence.

The project is part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary since the murder of Stephen Lawrence, seeking to stimulate dialogue with young people about racism in contemporary life, through encounters with Stephen Lawrence’s story in audio, and to exploit participatory arts methods to harness their creativity and, ultimately, mobilise this energy to mainstream anti-racism in schools. Aziz is a senior lecturer in Digital Design at London South Bank University.
