Robin Brinkworth

Robin is a Senior Lecturer of Product Design working on the BA (Hons) Product Design course in the School of Art, Architecture and Design. Teaching across all three levels, Robin also performs the roles of Level 5 Leader and Placement Year Coordinator.

Robin is a Senior Lecturer of Product Design working on the BA (Hons) Product Design course in the School of Art, Architecture and Design. Teaching across all three levels, Robin also performs the roles of Level 5 Leader and Placement Year Coordinator.

With 15 years experience of design practice prior to working in education, Robin has worked on a broad range of projects within the creative sector. These include the creation of architectural and sculptural installations, interior and furniture designs for retail and leisure as well as product design solutions.

Robin draws on a growing network of collaborators from within the School of Art, Architecture and Design, the wider university and Industrial Partner Organisations to connect students with industry. This includes the organisation of design competitions, exhibitions and industry networking events to enhance teaching and learning.

His recent personal practice includes design projects for global leaders in packaging manufacture as well as funded research collaborations with The Retail Institute and The Centre for Learning and Teaching within Leeds Beckett University.

Robin also provides representation for the Product Design course on the 3D Workshop Working Group and is an active member of the Design Research Group.

Research interests

Robin's research seeks to find new and engaging ways to explore and disseminate information relating to the use of materials and production processes within design.

Faraday Centre for Retail Excellence / Huhtamaki UK Ltd (June 2014). Design consultancy project to develop a series of integrated cup and lid concepts focussing on improvements to recyclability, handling in service and the consumer experience of drinking hot beverages on the go. The resulting design concepts were used as inspiration to help enable Huhtamaki to explore and understand the production feasibility of an integrated cup and lid solution that meets the following requirements, - fillable and re-fillable; - stackable and able to be stacked as high as current non-integrated cup designs; and deliver the same level of consumer appeal and usability as the current separate lid and cup designs.

Premier Farnell Wearable Technology Challenge / LBU Widening Participation / Ahead Partnership (2016). Working with the School of Creative Technology & Engineering in collaboration with Premier Farnell and Ahead Partnership. Participant in Final Project Event which included a showcase of the work of pupils from local schools, member of judging panel and the delivery of an event workshop.During the project I also developed and trained LBU Student Ambassadors to deliver a series of Human Centred Design Workshops to the 10 participating schools. Project listed as one of the Leeds Beckett notable successes of 2016 on the University website.

Project Office / New Wortley Community Centre / BA Design Product (2016). Tutored Level 5 Design Product students working on the design of Reception and Computer Hub areas. Oversaw the detailed design development of manufactured items for the project announced as the winner of the ‘Live Projects Network’ SEED Awards.

The Retail Institute Industry Event

BA (Hons) Design Product / The Retail Institute Industry Event (2017). Co-wrote a Level 5 student project to design a FMCG pack that incorporates both sensory and sustainabile design elements. The resulting student work was exhibited on the 23rd March during a Retail Institute members event on the theme of Designing Packaging for Consumers. Over 50 delegates from local industry attended the networking event which was hosted within the Design Product studios and included a showcase of work from all three levels of the course. Students were successfully placed with companies offering work experience opportunities following the event.
