San Diego 2023

Sun, Sand and Rugby Union

The LBU Rugby Union team went on a short tour of San Diego in March 2023, to play local sides and experience life at an American University. And a group of our Sports Journalism went with them to document the trip. This is some of their resulting work.

I recently took BA Journalism and BA Sports Journalism students on a trip to San Diego for 10 days to support the Universities Rugby team. This trip was an opportunity for the Journalism students to put everything they have been taught in the classroom, into practice. They were professional Video Journalists for the duration of the trip, scripting, interviewing, filming, editing, hitting tight deadlines. And it was all fast paced, but an incredible experience for them to develop their skills, meet new people and experience a whole different culture.

This trip has really helped build up their confidence, increased motivation and given them an insight into a career in Journalism in the future.

As part of the tour, students got to train with the professional MLR team San Diego Legion. We were there to help them prepare for their top of the table fixture against Houston. The lads got the opportunity to run plays against professional players and received coaching from the Legions coaching staff. One of the highlights of the training was former British and Irish Lion and England International, Alex Corbisiero delivering a scrum session to the forwards.

As part of the partnership with San Diego State University, the students had a tour of the university seeing the sport facilities available at a university in the US. Some students took the opportunity to network with academic staff at SDSU, with one student organising meeting with professors who lecture in the same subject as his masters. We also trained against their university team, where both university coaching teams taking lead roles within the session. We also did some outreach work with local clubs and delivered a session at OMBAC Rugby Club. While at this session coaching staff delivered a coaching session to players form the club and were supported by LBU students. We also did a question and answers session with players at OMBAC about opportunities to study in the UK and what its like being a student athlete in the rugby programme.
