Flipped learning

The flipped classroom is a pedagogical model in which the instructional content and the homework elements are “flipped". Material that would normally be delivered in a lecture is accessed by students during their self-directed study time, while activities that would normally be considered “homework” or student-centred learning form the basis of the face-to-face sessions.

This model requires that materials and resources are made available to students before the taught session, allowing the in-person time to focus on deepening understanding and broadening learning. This does not mean recording a full one-hour lecture for students to watch; rather, a variety of resources can be prepared to reflect the lecture content. These may include short videos (around 10 minutes), case studies, readings, or simulations.

The flipped classroom model is most effective when applied consistently across a whole module or course.

Tools to support flipped classrooms

The University supports a variety of tools to enhance the flipped classroom, including the sites and systems listed below.

YouTube

YouTube contains millions of videos uploaded by people from across the world. It can be used to support the flipped learning model by allowing staff to use existing videos, such as TED Talks, for students to watch and support their learning. Staff can create playlists of videos around specific topics or modules so that students can access all relevant videos in one place. These playlists and videos can be embedded within MyBeckett. A guide on how to embed videos in Blackboard Ultra can be found on the MyBeckett support webpages.

MyBeckett

MyBeckett is the University’s Virtual Learning Environment. It can be used in a variety of ways to support learning and the flipped classroom model. At its most basic, it provides a single source of information for students about their modules. This may include links to Panopto recordings, YouTube videos, or library papers hosted on other sites. Information should be organised to help students progress through the module and understand what is relevant to each topic or week. In addition, MyBeckett offers a range of tools that can provide engaging content outside the classroom, including tests, blogs, and discussion boards.

These tools allow staff to monitor student engagement with modules and resources before face-to-face sessions. MyBeckett enables the use of multiple tools and resources to create interactive and multimedia materials for students, supporting the delivery of a flipped learning experience. It can be accessed by all staff and students across a wide variety of platforms and devices.

Panopto

Panopto is the lecture recording and video creation platform used at Leeds Beckett University. It is available to all staff and can be accessed through the Panopto website using your MyBeckett credentials.

The software can capture PowerPoint slides, audio, webcam video, and on-screen activity. This enables staff to create recordings at their desk, such as narrated presentations or software demonstrations, and share them with students through MyBeckett.

Panopto can also be used to record live lectures, providing students with the opportunity to revisit content later. These recordings can be reused by staff as a resource for future students.
