This guide is for staff who want to add Panopto to a MyBeckett Ultra module to create and share lecture recordings and other video content with students and how to rollover your embedded Panopto Videos after performing a module copy to ensure students will be able to view them.

IT Services provide support for Panopto and have more information on recording live lectures within Teaching Spaces on their webpage - see the below section How do I schedule a lecture recording for the link to Teaching Spaces.

Rollover

The following steps will change the viewing permissions to ensure all students will be able to watch your Panopto Video embeds in your Ultra modules.

Panopto is the University’s video tool that has multiple functionality such as lecture capture, video content and video assessments to support Teaching and Learning.

Panopto software allows you to capture your voice, the PC screen and any PowerPoint slides that you choose to present either live in a lecture room or pre-recorded to embed into your module.

The recordings (video) can be edited and shared.

You can also upload other video files to Panopto in order to share these with your students and directly embed them to present engaging content.

It also allows a video assignment submission folder to be created for students to use to screen capture presentations and upload.

Follow these steps to add a Panopto Video Folder link to your Ultra module. This is an important step to ensure your video content is accessible and check that you have transferred from previous years.

Why is this important?

  • Check video transfers copied over successfully
  • Access for Instructors (and Students if visible): a central location for all module videos
  • Create and upload new video recordings from within your module

a. On the module content page, navigate to where you would like to add the Panopto Video Folder.

b. Click the purple plus icon.

If you have copied over content from a previous year module and there are Panopto recordings embedded and/or links, you need to contact Digital Services to copy over all the Panopto recordings to ensure your students are able to access the recordings.

If you have recordings in your personal Panopto folder (My Folder) then copying into your module is the same process described below.

However, if you have only a few that require copying you can follow the steps below.

a. From within your Ultra Module, go to Reading Lists & Tools via the side menu.

Open Panopto Video Folder in your Ultra module via Reading List and Tools in the menu

The following staff guide explains how to embed Panopto videos with your content area in MyBeckett Ultra Modules.

The benefits of embedding videos into a document rather than using a link is the presentation of the video are:

  • Play in the content area or pop out into full screen
  • Add the slides of the PowerPoint presentation for students to download
  • Embed further videos, files and text on the same topic

*Ensure you have provisioned the Panopto Video Folder first by adding in the content area before proceeding.

**Copy the recordings if stored in another module or personal folder (called My Folder)

Adding captions to your Panopto recordings and other video content enhances the viewing experience for your students and ensures that your content is inclusive and accessible. Captions make content accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing, ensuring they can fully engage with the video.

Please note that when using Automatic Speech Recognition captions you will need to check and edit the captions as the tools have variable success rates. Providing captions as accurately as possible remains the legal obligation. More information is available in Jisc's guide to video captioning and accessibility regulations.

The following guides will provide step by step instructions for adding captions to your videos. You may need to log in to the IT self-service portal to access some guides. Please contact IT Services for any support with Panopto captions.
