Timed to coincide with International Women in Engineering day on 23rd June, Leeds Beckett hosted an activity day at the University’s Headingley Campus to inspire the next generation of female engineers. University Technical College Leeds were invited to take part, with 25 Year 10 pupils attending on the day.

The pupils enjoyed sessions on both Civil and Electrical engineering, engaging in practical and interactive activities to learn more about the disciplines. The sessions were led by Dr Roz Wyatt Millington, Dr Vasiliki Ioannidou, Dr Oldouz Payan and Dr An Huynh.

The academic team also led a Q&A session, talking through their own career paths in engineering and answering any queries about how to get into the industry.

Gemma Wright, Assistant Principal at UTC, said after the event: “I just wanted to say thank you for such a great day when our girls came to you for Women in Engineering day. The level of challenge was perfect - the girls were absolutely buzzing about it! Some of them said they definitely want to come to university with you now which is a fantastic accolade.”

Dr Vasiliki Ioannidou, Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University, commented: “Leeds Beckett University and Engineering in particular, is a strong support of established EDI policies and actively promotes events, such as the 'Women in Engineering' event, to enhance visibility of Engineering courses to underrepresented, in terms of student numbers, groups.

“We are delighted to see that what we offered to the UTC girls, an active hands-on experience of experimental Surveying equipment, was greeted with success and that many girls declared that they wish to join us as students on our Engineering courses in the near future.”
