Brandon John-Baptiste - BSc (Hons) Computer Science

For me going to university is finally an opportunity to learn and study computing whilst being surrounded by like-minded people who share my passion for the subject equally. Growing up I've rarely had people in my life that also understood programming and computing so it's very refreshing to interact with people who have the same interests.

Stories

"What I look forward the most to is proving to myself that I can apply myself and keep myself accountable by putting 100% effort into everything I do here at the university so that when I finish my degree I know I did the very best I could, and would have no regrets about my time here."

Studying Computer Science

Computing, in general, has always been an area of great interest to me. During primary school, I'd obtained enough experience and knowledge of building computer games that I started my own club teaching other students in my year to make their own games. As the years went on I started to teach myself more and more, teaching myself all sorts of technologies including HTML, CSS, Javascript, Flask, Django and React to name a few.

While learning all these technologies I became interested in understanding how and why things worked the way they did, this longing for a further understanding eventually led me to pursue a degree in computer science.

Studying at university is ultimately my biggest opportunity to further and deepen my understanding and to really pick apart how things work, allowing me to then use this knowledge to apply it in a career in software development.

Looking to the future I'd love to work for a big tech company, where my work could help millions of people and really change people's lives, often these companies require a degree, therefore completing my degree is very important to me. Not only for career prospects but also on a personal level as my academic career has had a lot of challenges along the way and therefore finally completing it with a degree at the end would be a fitting end.

How will The Cognni BSc Computer Science Scholarship help?

The scholarship will allow me to pursue a further understanding of computing without being afraid of being held back by my equipment or a paywall. I will be able to have a more developed and structured learning plan to help me further myself in my studies and apply concepts learned into my university work.

By having a more structured and complete learning plan I could then begin to work on my own projects that will help my experience programming which I could then take this experience and look to apply to work experience or other tech opportunities helping me further my academic career.

Receiving the scholarship fund would also enable me to look further into robotics and automation, an area I've always had an interest in but never had the funds to explore completely. For example, purchasing a Rasberry Pi try to make small robotic automation such as a temperature-controlled fan etc.

Ideally five years after graduating I'd love to be working at a big tech firm. Working alongside other professionals with drive and talent, that are committed to their work and be producing products that I'm proud to be a part of.

I'm quite fond of web development as it's an area I've studied the most and is an area that I personally could see myself working in, whether that be front-end development or back-end development. Although I'm not dead set on this idea and I'm very open to other areas that may reveal themselves during my time here at university.
