Finding A Job
Leeds has many opportunities to earn a bit of extra cash. For many students, having a job while at university means the difference between thriving and surviving. Here’s a few tips to help you get stuck into the working world.
Bar/Restaurant work
Leeds has literally hundreds of bars and restaurants so there’s always work going if you know where to look. Keep an eye out as you’re walking around and follow as many different places on Facebook and Twitter to learn about vacancies first. The students’ union bars also have jobs available from time to time so that may be a good place to start.
Jobsites
Online you’ll find a ton of websites offering work for students. These can be quite hard to navigate and often promise work that’s not entirely relevant. On the other hand, you can find some interesting looking opportunities with agencies and companies offering brand ambassador roles. This can mean getting involved in some interesting, creative PR exercises on campus.
Other sites such as Student Beans, Student Job and Just Student Jobs have regular jobs that are suitable for students so keep an eye out.
Volunteering
If you’re not in the position where you need money right away, it’s worth thinking a little about the kinds of things you’re going to want on your CV in a few years’ time. When you start applying for jobs, there’s no greater currency than having some evidence to back up your claims. Take a look at the kind of jobs you’re going to be applying for – what skills are they asking you to show? How can you build up experience of those skills?
If you’re interested in volunteering in a broader sense then the Students’ Union Volunteering group have many partnerships with local organisations doing some brilliant work in the community around you. Further afield there are other organisations like Doing Good Leeds that can match you up with the type of volunteer work that you care about most.
