Avoiding Burnout and Finding Balance
Look after yourself!
"Self-care" might sound like a trendy buzzword but looking after yourself doesn't have to be expensive or time-consuming. In fact, some of the most impactful habits are completely free.
- Prioritise Sleep: Lack of sleep directly hurts your academic performance by impairing how your brain processes and recalls information. At work, fatigue ruins your focus and puts your safety at risk.
- Fuel Your Body: Studying takes massive brainpower. Eating regular, balanced meals keeps your energy stable, boosts your academic performance, and improves overall wellbeing.
- Hydrate Often: Dehydration actively damages concentration, memory, and mood. Drink water regularly throughout the day and listen to what your body needs.
- Keep Moving: Regular physical movement - even just a 10-minute walk or stretch - boosts circulation, clears mental fatigue, and lowers stress levels.
- Take Deliberate Breaks: Step away from the laptop screen and your workspace regularly. Giving your mind a moment to relax prevents burnout and actually improves long-term productivity.
The Bottom Line: Your wellbeing and your success go hand in hand.
Don’t burn yourself out!
Ambition is a strength, but you don't need to say "yes" to every opportunity that comes your way. Here is how to keep your drive without losing your sanity:
- Prioritise Rest: Actively make time to recharge. Rest isn't a reward for finishing your work; it's a prerequisite for doing good work.
- Set Firm Boundaries: Learn to guard your time fiercely. Saying no to extra tasks means saying yes to your own mental clarity and health.
- Stop the Comparison: Focus on your own journey. Comparing your workload or achievements to others only fuels unnecessary stress and anxiety.
- Take Proactive Breaks: Don't push through intense fatigue. Stepping away for even a few minutes resets your focus and prevents long-term exhaustion.
- Track Your Limits: Learn to recognise the signs of overload - like brain fog, irritability, or chronic fatigue - and adjust your commitments before you crash.
The Bottom Line: Building a career is a marathon, not a sprint. Sustainable success comes from balance, not burnout.
Balancing everything
Trying to balance academics, a social life, and a part-time job can feel completely overwhelming. You want to enjoy the university experience, maintain your grades, and earn enough money to fund your life and your fees - all at the same time.
It is vital to understand that you cannot do everything at 100% capacity all at once. Prioritising one aspect of your life during a busy week does not mean you are failing at the others; it simply means you are adapting. Stop trying to juggle every ball perfectly, and focus on progress, not perfection.
Finally…
Remember: You are a student, not a superhero. Finding the right balance takes time, and there will be weeks where things feel a little chaotic. The goal isn't to be a perfect machine; it's about being kind to yourself while you navigate this chapter of your life.
If you are currently feeling overwhelmed and need a bit of extra guidance, remember that you don't have to figure it out alone.
Reach out: Talk to Student Advice, Residence Life Team or academic advisors if your workload is impacting your mental health. Remember that LBU also has a fantastic Student Wellbeing Team to help you, when everything feels too much to handle on your own.
Take a step back: Re-evaluate your current schedule and see where you can safely press pause or delegate.
Your health and happiness are always worth the investment. Take it one day at a time!
