Don’t forget that everyone is in the same position, eager to meet new people and make friends. But remember, don’t put too much pressure on yourself, enjoy the experience and the friends will follow.

Top Tips from our 2016/17 students:

We asked our 2016/17 students their top tips on living together, they told us::

“Plan some social events with your flatmates and get to know each other”
“Deal with problems in person, avoid sending notes or Facebook messages, sit down and have a chat”
“Be considerate - clean up after yourself and keep communal areas tidy”
“People are on different schedules so keep the noise down early in the morning and late at night”
“If you have a problem, get in touch with the Residential Officers who are able to help offer advice”
“Check with your other flatmates before inviting friends over”

Welcome Events

At University there is always something happening, especially during Fresher’s. If you see something going on in your halls or in town, invite your new flatmates along, it could be a great bonding session.  Don’t miss our welcome BBQ, Get Fresh on The Acre, which takes place on Sunday 17th September.

Hold the door!

If you’re in and looking for a chat, why not leave your door open and let your flatmates see you’re an approachable kind of person. The same goes for social spaces, hang out and watch some TV or read a book, it might encourage your flatmates to do the same.

Put the kettle on!

You’re in Yorkshire now where one of the best ways to break the ice is with a good cuppa. If you’re making a cup of tea, why not boil the kettle with enough for everyone in the flat.

Get baking!

Whether you’re an amazing baker or a bit of an amateur, try whipping up a batch of something yummy and offer it around to your new flatmates. Even if they go wrong it’s something to laugh about together.

Bring on the popcorn

Movie nights and nibbles are a great way to get to know your new flatmates and friends. Invite people over to your flat or meet in the common room with a movie or a good box set to enjoy a fun evening of your favourite flicks.

Dinner for one?

Of course not! There is no greater joy when you’re hungry and someone asks you if you want anything from the takeaway. You can then discuss some plans for going out later.
