Thrifty with Finances: Making Connections Without the Cash

University life and living in halls is a great way to meet new people, build connections and share new experiences. However, sometimes this can be pretty expensive, especially when a lot of socialising can include nights out, meals out, activities and shopping. Good news, having fun and continuing to build on your connections doesn’t have to break the bank. With a little creativity and forward thinking, there’s LOTS of affordable ways to enjoy student life and staying in budget!

Host a night in

A night in can often be as fun as going out and can be much cheaper. Invite over some friends or gather your flatmates for a movie night, shared meal or games night. You can ask people bring their favourite drinks and snacks and pull together for a cheaper, fun, night in.

Explore Events

Leeds Beckett offers free or low-cost events for their students including societies, workshops, days out, live music and comedy. Look out for free or low-cost events, sign up to a society for free and keep an eye on social media for the latest deals and events.

Go outside

Getting outdoors is a simple and affordable way to spend time with friends, connect with nature and explore your new surroundings. You can organise a picnic, a hike/walk or just spend some time chatting in a local green space.

Look out for discounts

Leeds is a popular student city and many businesses in and around Leeds offer pretty good student discounts including restaurants, cinemas, museums and activity centres. Always check if you can grab a discount before paying full price! Lots of phone companies also offer discounts and deals so make sure you check these out too.

Share the cost

Socialising doesn’t have to mean one person pays for everything. If you want to visit somewhere with a friend, try to split the cost fairly and consider things like contributing to a picnic, sharing transport costs, taking it in turns to host an event.

Focus on time together

The best experiences come from spending time together and creating memories, it doesn’t need to be costly. You can grab a discounted coffee and take a walk in the park, cook together, or visit a free museum, meaningful social experiences can be created on any budget.
By choosing affordable activities and planning ahead, you can enjoy everything university life has to offer while keeping your finances under control.
