How did the nomination come about?
I think it came through our close relationship with Leeds Beckett University. I also received a personal nomination for Mentor of the Year from one of my interns, who now works at Hull City Council. We take on an intern every year, even though our team is only five or six people. Across the wider company, with over 500 UK locations, interns get the chance to work in different branches and gain a broad range of experiences. Supporting students is something we’re really committed to.How did the partnership with Leeds Beckett University come about?
Our training and development team works closely with Leeds Beckett on events and the internship programme. We take in a lot of interns each year, and the relationship has naturally grown stronger over time, which has been great for both sides.Who is your main audience for internships?
We mainly work with third year students looking for work placements. Many interns return to Enterprise Mobility after graduating, and some progress into management roles. Students who haven’t done a placement with us can also apply directly. What would be your standout moment of working with a student or graduate?
Every year I’m amazed by the quality of the interns we get. It’s incredibly rewarding to support their professional development and see what they’re capable of. Each intern brings something different — new ideas, fresh perspectives, and their own approach to challenges.
The best part for me is watching them grow. Several interns I’ve worked with are now in management roles and seeing them flourish is fantastic.
What do students typically go on to do after their internship?
They go in all sorts of directions. Many stay with Enterprise Mobility, while others move into roles with councils or start their own businesses. Our internships give students real world experience, things you simply can’t learn in a classroom.
They get exposure to areas like finance, risk, customer service, and operations. It’s a great foundation for understanding how businesses really work.
What feedback have you received from interns and graduates?
The feedback is overwhelmingly positive. Most say the experience boosted their confidence and helped them realise what they’re capable of. Maureen, the intern who nominated me, recently came back as part of her course and was full of confidence, sharing everything she’d been doing since.
At the Awards for Excellence, I heard the same theme from many students: they didn’t think they could do it — until they did. Often, it’s simply about believing in yourself and taking the opportunities that come your way.
What’s your top tip for students and graduates looking to improve their employability?
Have confidence and jump in. Most skills can be learned. What really matters is your attitude. Believe that you can do it, take opportunities when they come, and the rest will follow.Beckett Careers
