A Summer of Competition, Confidence and Growth in Junior Athletics

This year has been a fantastic one for our Junior Athletics programme, with a focus on introducing young athletes to the excitement of competition in a fun, supportive and accessible environment. Throughout the season, we have worked to create opportunities for children of all abilities to experience athletics, develop new skills and, most importantly, enjoying being competitive. From our end-of-term challenges to the Run, Jump, Throw Festival and our Summer Series competitions, this year has been packed with opportunities for young athletes to develop, compete and have fun.

We're delighted to see the programme continue to grow, with the launch of our junior memberships and more young people than ever becoming part of our athletics community. It has been wonderful to welcome both returning athletes and those joining us for the very first time, creating an environment where everyone feels encouraged to learn, improve and have fun. The introduction of junior memberships marks an exciting milestone, providing a strong foundation for the future of the programme. As participation continues to grow, we look forward to building on this year's success by offering even more opportunities for children to train, compete and enjoy athletics in a supportive environment.

One of our biggest achievements this year has been the development of our three-part Beckett Sport Summer Series competition. Across the summer term, we delivered three junior competition events, welcoming almost 300 athletes to take part across the series. For many of these young athletes, it was their first experience of competition. Whether standing on the start line or preparing to throw for the first time, every child embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm and determination.

Competition can often feel intimidating, particularly for younger athletes, so our aim was to create events that were friendly, relaxed and focused on participation as much as performance. Our junior athletics coaches were on hand throughout the events to help children warm up, take them to the start line and provide a friendly, reassuring face, helping to create a positive and supportive environment. It was fantastic to see children encouraging one another, celebrating personal achievements and leaving with smiles on their faces, regardless of where they finished.

Across the three events, there were more than 450 event entries, highlighting not only the popularity of the programme but also the willingness of athletes to challenge themselves across a range of disciplines. Our 60-minute track competition format, combined with one or two field events at each meeting, has proved to be a real success. By keeping events shorter and accessible, families have been able to stay and enjoy the experience without committing to a full day, making competition a realistic and enjoyable step for those new to the sport.
Alongside the competition series, we were delighted to introduce our Run, Jump, Throw Festival, which welcomed 60 children for an action-packed two hours of athletics. The festival gave participants the opportunity to try a variety of events in a relaxed, fun environment while developing the fundamental movement skills that underpin athletics and competition. Throughout the session, the children also took part in fun, team-based warm-up games, before finishing the day with a series of exciting relay races that brought everyone together. It was a wonderful celebration of participation, demonstrating that athletics is about much more than winning medals.

While the numbers tell part of the story, the real success of the programme has been seen in the progress of our young athletes. Throughout the year, we watched children grow in confidence, develop new friendships and achieve personal milestones. For some, success meant running a little faster or jumping a little further than before. For others, it simply meant having the confidence to step onto the track and compete for the very first time. Every achievement, big or small, deserved to be celebrated.

None of this would have been possible without the support of the Beckett Sport Juniors team, our volunteers and the officials at each event. Your enthusiasm, encouragement and commitment have helped create a welcoming environment where every child has had the opportunity to enjoy athletics, develop at their own pace and leave feeling proud of what they have achieved.

Thank you for being part of such a successful year. We can't wait to see what next season brings.
