Exploring the science of sport: My journey from a BSc to a MSc at Leeds Beckett
Passionate about sport and exercise, Max Pinckney knew early on that a career in sport science was the right path. After completing a Level 3 BTEC diploma, a visit to Leeds Beckett’s Carnegie School of Sport confirmed it was the perfect place to study. He completed his BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Science and loved it so much that he stayed for his MSc Biomechanics of Human Movement. In this blog, he shares his journey, from hands-on research with elite athletes to the incredible support and opportunities that have shaped his career ambitions.
I've always loved sports, exercise, and being active. After completing a Level 3 BTEC diploma in Sports and Exercise Sciences at college, I knew I wanted a career in sport and exercise science. When I visited Leeds Beckett on a college trip to see Carnegie School of Sport, I was impressed by the facilities and the welcoming environment. By the time I finished my college course, I knew Leeds Beckett was the place for me.
My undergraduate experience was incredibly positive. Over the three years, I made great friends and gained so many valuable experiences. The supportive atmosphere and the opportunities available made my decision to stay for postgraduate study an easy one. The biomechanics and sports facilities at Leeds Beckett are among the best in the country, even used by Olympic athletes. The lecturers go above and beyond to support students, helping us develop professionally and gain real-world experience beyond the classroom. These opportunities have been essential for my growth, reinforcing my decision to continue my learning here.
Being a student at Leeds Beckett has given me so many memorable experiences. One of the highlights has been working as a research assistant on various projects at Carnegie School of Sport, where I’ve had the chance to collect performance data on high-level athletes. Socially, Wednesday nights are always a great time with the clubs and societies hosting events, and one of the most exciting events of the year is Varsity. There’s such an incredible atmosphere, with so many sports to watch, and the Varsity rugby match at Headingley Stadium is an unforgettable experience. Last year, I handed in my dissertation on the same day as the match, making it the perfect way to celebrate.
Beyond academics, Leeds Beckett offers so many opportunities to develop professionally. Working on staff-led projects has helped me build my CV and gain hands-on lab experience. There are also fantastic placement opportunities, including working with teams like Leeds Rhinos and Leeds United. Attending subject-related conferences has been another great way to network and enhance my learning. Even if you don’t pursue a career directly related to your degree, Leeds Beckett provides the skills and opportunities to help you grow in various directions.
Looking ahead, I hope to build a career in sport and exercise science, with a focus on biomechanics and injury prevention. My undergraduate and MSc studies have given me the skills, knowledge, and work ethic to confidently enter the field and make an impact.
For anyone considering studying at Leeds Beckett, I couldn’t recommend it more. The university offers so much both professionally and socially, and Leeds itself is a fantastic city to be a student in. There’s always something going on, and the supportive community makes it a great place to learn and grow. If you’re thinking about applying, go for it!
