The university’s economic impact in the city and region aims to make a decisive and positive difference to people, communities and organisations by creating graduates who will become exceptional employees, dynamic citizens and enterprising leaders.

Supporting Leeds

The university is established in the city with two modern campuses offering access to state-of-the-art facilities that enable excellent learning, research, and community engagement. Both campuses have benefitted from two new buildings between 2020 and 2021: the £44m Carnegie School of Sport building in Headingley campus, which opened in 2020, and the £85m Leeds School of Arts building in City Campus, which opened in 2021. Further investments are in the works as the university is constantly improving, the main one being a £6m redevelopment of the Leeds Law School.

Investing in facilities strengthens Leeds Beckett’s position as an anchor institution, enabling partnerships and community involvement. The university is a Principal Education Partner of LEEDS 2023, with Leeds School of Arts playing an active role in organising and hosting key events throughout the year of culture taking over the city in 2023.

In 2020/2021, the university invested £2.9m in student support grants, like the Digital Access Fund, Hardship Fund, and the Covid-19 Support Scheme, helping over 5,000 students during the challenges of remote learning. Student support is essential in amplifying the university’s positive impact on the communities in Leeds and the wider region.

Leeds Beckett University prides itself on its friendly and supportive approach and its positive role within the city of Leeds. To ensure the university continues to deliver on its commitment to positively contribute to the local economy, the Board of Governors is working to maintain the university’s financial sustainability. This is done through a financial control system which is based on a strategic planning process, monthly reviews of financial performance, and reactive efforts to preserve Leeds Beckett’s role in delivering excellent education, research, partnerships and professional services.
