Lily Corke-Butters at graduation

Lily Corke-Butters is a class of 2022 Leeds School of Arts graduate. Hear about Lily's experience of studying Filmmaking.

Why did you choose to study Filmmaking at The Northern Film School at Leeds Beckett?

I chose to study Filmmaking here for two reasons; the first was that it was the only course that did an experimental film module, which is something I really wanted to do. Other courses offered it as an elective module, but I loved that this course made everyone do it. I found it quite exciting, seeing everyone make some cool, weird films!

The other reason I chose Leeds Beckett was the open day I attended.

I just got a really nice vibe from it, the tutors cared about stories and storytelling, and you could tell they cared about their students.

It was less about being flashy and showing off the technical kit, it was about the stories that the film school produce which I appreciated.

What was your favourite part of your course?

My favourite part of the course was the graduation film project. It was the biggest project we’d done and I was writing and directing it, so it was super close to my heart. Everyone in the crew really cared about it too, the great thing about the course is that there are so many amazing people on it, and you can choose who you want to work with, then come together and work towards the same goal.

What’s next for you?

So last summer I did a placement with an independent film production company in Leeds. I found out about it through the Beckett Careers team and one of my tutors also emailed me about it, so I thought I may as well apply! I’m so glad I did it, it’s set me up perfectly as since then I’ve continued working with them throughout the year. We’ve got a shoot coming up in a few weeks for a short film, then I’m also doing some freelance editing work on the side.

What was your most joyful moment of being a Leeds Beckett student?

My most joyful moment was probably finishing the shoot of our final film. After four days of such hard work, we were slightly sleep-deprived and exhausted, but we finished the film and it was amazing to say it was done. The fact that everyone’s work beforehand had been building up to that for six months, wrapping the shoot was an amazing feeling.
