Welcome to our placement students in The Knowledge Exchange

Meet Rawan and Harry. They will be working with The Knowledge Exchange during their placement module. They are both third year students here at Leeds Beckett University; Harry studies Media Communication Cultures, and Rawan studies English and Creative Writing. Here’s what they have to say about why they joined us and what they look forward to.

Hi, I’m Rawan. I chose to undertake a placement module because, like many university students my age, I’m still getting to grips with the world of work- and, really, the world at large. I knew I needed to get my foot in the door, gain insight, experience and hopefully some confidence in my abilities. (Besides, I had floundered one too many times at the question, “What experience can you bring to this role?”)

Truthfully, when I had been told I was assigned to The Knowledge Exchange, my immediate reaction was, “The what?” and I’m sure some of you, whilst reading this, might be thinking something along those lines. Well, as I later learned, The Knowledge Exchange is the home of Leeds Beckett’s Business Community that acts as a bridge between the academic and the external world, supporting businesses to flourish with the guidance of some of the university’s experts (hence the name).

My role for the next few weeks will be to bring to life stories from both The Knowledge Exchange in The Rose Bowl and the Business Centre at Queen Square - whether that is the fascinating history of Queen Square’s old buildings, its story of growth into the centre for enterprise it is today, or the stories of the people from all walks of life who make up the community.

It’s amazing that, just a few weeks ago, I never knew this kind of thing even existed. Already I’ve learnt so much, been introduced to a whole new world, and I know that more new and fascinating things are waiting for me down the road. I will be gaining the valuable insight and experience and confidence that I had hoped for when applying - and that’s why I can’t wait to get started.

Harry Plampin

Hi everyone! My name is Harry, and this is the beginning of my journey with The Knowledge Exchange. I am a Leeds Beckett student embarking into my third year and one of the opportunities this year was to work with a company to gain some real-life experience, and as a typical CV deprived student I grabbed the chance with both hands.

The Knowledge Exchange seems like a great chance for me to work with and hopefully showcase my skills that I have learnt from my previous experiences and time at university. The Knowledge Exchange harbours great talent and the community around it seems collaborative and I’m excited to be a part of it.

I will be working with the already great team there to help grow The Knowledge Exchange and lend a hand on the blog writing, conducting interviews and the social media presence, I’ve had previous experience doing bits of digital presence and writing so I’ll do a good job. I’m interested in digital media, writing and film and I’d like to move into a similar area of work after university, so this experience is perfect for me to gain some practical experience.

I am excited to work with and get to know all our clients to make the most of my time at The Knowledge Exchange, like the clients here, I think I will get a lot out of The Knowledge Exchange and I am happy to be here!
