LIfe as a Digital Marketer degree apprentice

As a first year Digital Marketer Degree Apprentice studying at Leeds Beckett University, I am developing my knowledge and applying it directly in my full-time role as an Account Manager for the Yorkshire Asian Business Association (YABA) and Northern Powerhouse Ethnic Minority Business & Policy Forum (NPH). This opportunity to blend academic learning with hands-on experience has already been invaluable in helping me grow as both a student and a professional.

So far, I have completed four key modules: Introduction to Marketing Communications, Marketing Data and Analytics, Digital Marketing Tools, and Marketing Essentials. Each one has provided fresh insights and skills that I have been able to use immediately in my role.

In Introduction to Marketing Communications, I learned how to create clear, engaging messages tailored to different audiences. I applied this by refining social media posts and newsletters, ensuring our tone and content resonate with members and stakeholders.

The Marketing Data and Analytics module highlighted the power of measuring and monitoring results. I have used these skills to analyse campaign metrics, identify trends and patterns, and make data-driven decisions to improve future outreach and customer journeys.

From Digital Marketing Tools, I learned how to effectively use industry-standard platforms like email marketing, website optimisation, SEO, and social media to plan, monitor, and measure campaigns. I am using these skills to enhance our email strategy, optimise our website, and track results with analytics tools.

My current module Marketing Essentials has provided a strong foundation in marketing theory - from the marketing mix to customer segmentation. This has influenced how I approach event promotion, ensuring we target the right audiences with the right messages at the right time.

At first, it was a new experience balancing study with a full-time role, but the structure of my degree apprenticeship and the support provided by Leeds Beckett University has been excellent. This first year has already shown me just how powerful a degree apprenticeship can be for refining existing skills and gaining high-level knowledge from expert lecturers.

I’m excited to continue building on what I’ve learned so far and applying new ideas directly into my work. I would also highly recommend the degree apprenticeship route to any employers and employees considering this option as it offers expert knowledge and the chance to apply it in real time. It not only develops valuable skills that benefit both the organisation and the individual’s career but also builds confidence, broadens perspectives, and opens doors to new opportunities.
