How to cool down your building - tips on how to perform 'Night cooling' to keep your house up to 5 degrees cooler than outside temperatures

  1. Take advantage of the 'thermal mass' of your home - brick walls absorb heat during the day to keep you cool, so they then need to be cooled down overnight ready for tomorrow, if not, your home will get hotter and hotter each day, even if the outside air temperature stays the same.
  2. UK night-time temperatures are almost always cold (lower than internal temperatures) so use this free source of air conditioning!
  3. Get up early; open windows and doors as soon as you can (5am?) to chill the building fabric down, (if safe to do so keep windows open overnight)
  4. Prepare in advance: if you can perform night cooling for several days in advance of the main heatwave the night cooling will be more effective.
  5. Try to make your house a 'cave', close all windows, doors and curtains as soon as it gets warmer outside than inside (could be 9am) and don’t open them until it is cooler outside than in and then switch to 'open' mode (could be 9pm).
  6. Use fans to blow hot air out of your house or cold air in to help cool your home when in 'open' mode!
  7. Check if there is a hot and cold side of your house, if so pull air in from the cold side and push it out of the hot side.
  8. Don’t be tempted to open your windows during the day!
  9. If you want a breeze, use a fan, don’t open windows!

Other things that might help

  1. If there are hot parts or rooms of your home then seal these off from the rest of the house with internal doors.
  2. Use an atomiser to spray water into the air in your home; raising the relative humidity will reduce the air temperature.
  3. Spray yourself with water, as it evaporates this will make you cooler.
  4. Set up shading on the outside of windows; this could be black out blinds or patio parasols for example, shading on the outside of windows are more effective than shading on the inside of windows, but curtains are better than nothing!
  5. Buy a paddling pool!
