As of March 2022, The Institute of Biomedical Sciences (IBMS) has accredited the BSc Applied Biomedical Sciences route at Leeds Beckett University. This allows students to apply for a 45-week placement in a local NHS hospital Pathology laboratory to gain valuable first-hand experience. During this time, you will learn valuable laboratory techniques whilst completing the IBMS Registration Portfolio. This would then enable you to be eligible at graduation to apply to become HCPC registered as a Biomedical Scientist. These placements are supported by Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, a large employer in the region and hub for the West Yorkshire Association of Acute Trusts Pathology network. A purpose-built suite of Pathology laboratories is to open in 2023 at the St. James’s site.

Through making professional contacts and completing the required training whilst on placement, you will have significantly improved chances of achieving an NHS Band 5 Biomedical Scientist position upon leaving Leeds Beckett University. According to IBMS, ‘students who impress their employers whilst on placement are regularly offered jobs at the end of their studies’. This pathway is placed between Levels 5 and 6 of the BSc Biomedical Science degree, applications are taken in Semester 2 of Level 5.
