Samuel Hands graduated from his course in 2022. Below he shares his experience studying at Leeds Beckett University.

Why did you choose to study your course specifically at LBU?

There were a few factors that went into my decision but a big one was that it was local to my family and friends. I’m only half an hour away. I initially applied for a different course and then transferred to the counselling and mental health programme. Everyone at the university who helped me change courses was so supportive. They had my back, so it was a smooth transition.

How has your course helped you in your career so far?

The skills I gained on my course at Leeds Beckett University got me my current job. Studying this course specifically gave me the confidence to go for the role. I directly use some of the knowledge that I’ve learned during my course every day.

What was your favourite part of the course?

The different people that I’ve met. When I first started, I kept myself to myself as I had my own little group. I was able to go on to expand my group through my course and my social circle has grown as a result.

Have you faced any challenges? And how have you overcome those?

I’m a very practical person and, as I’ve mentioned, dyslexic, so I was challenged by some parts of my studies. However, I learned to use my practical skills and knowledge and I was able to successfully complete my course.

What advice would you give to your younger self starting out on your journey?

I’d tell myself it’s OK to make a mistake. I started off on a different course that wasn’t the right one for me. Admitting that to myself and transferring was a good decision. The support I received from the university made that possible. Also, I wasn’t diagnosed as dyslexic until halfway through my second year so if I’d say seek out help when you realise you need it.
