Lauren Korytko

I’m Lauren and I’m a final year Psychology BSc student. In my spare time I enjoy photography, fishing and reading, and hope to continue my studies on a postgraduate course next academic year.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to psychology?

During my A levels, I decided I wanted to study psychology at university. I was drawn to the subject mostly by an interest in forensic psychology and a desire to help others and to work with compassion. However, I had never formally studied psychology and I was really worried that I would feel behind before I had even started. I attended multiple open days for different universities, but in visiting the School of Humanities and Social Sciences and speaking to those on the Psychology team specifically, I felt reassured and supported in my decision, and it gave me the confidence to apply myself throughout the course of my degree.

What made you choose Leeds Beckett?

I chose Leeds Beckett primarily due to the supportive community I felt both upon visiting the university and also in hearing positive experiences from friends who had also attended. I was also attracted by the vibrant student community in Leeds and a love of the area more widely.

What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?

Over the course of my degree, I’ve had many positive experiences, but overall I would say that my favourite thing has been all the people I have met along the way. I’ve had access to so many opportunities for both voluntary and part-time work, and have been afforded the opportunity to network with many people working in the forefront of my field. The knowledge and experience that I’ve accumulated over the last three years through my degree has already proved invaluable in gaining further opportunities beyond my education, and will be carried forth for years to come.

What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?

Apply yourself and take every opportunity that you can! There are so many opportunities offered within the course itself that are directly relevant to many different career paths within psychology, which are highly valued by employers and also help to develop your professional skills more widely. Your time at university will go by so quickly, so enjoy every minute and definitely make use of every chance you get to apply the knowledge from the course to working scenarios.
