What is your current role?

Policy Assistant at Brecon Beacons National Park

How did you find this job?

I found my job on LinkedIn but used online services like Environment Job and Charity Job to look for vacancies.

What do you enjoy about this job?

I like my job because it's a great mix of working in the local government and working in the environmental sector.

We are gearing up to launch our management plan, Future Beacon, which is the vision for the park for the next 25 years. It has 5 missions around climate, nature, water, people, and place, which gives a good indication of how wide the scope of my role is. I work on protecting and enhancing the historic environment, research partnerships, and improving youth engagement, so my role is really varied. Plus, I get fun days out monitoring biodiversity and learning about our landscape, not to mention a beautiful commute through the mountain range!

What skills are you using in this job that you learnt at Leeds Beckett?

I use a lot of the skills I gained from university, like research and data collection, which informs the baseline data we have for the Future Beacons project. Doing group work prepared me to collaborate on projects and work in a team.

During university, I worked in the Student's Union, which gave me a lot of transferable skills like communication, timekeeping, and organisation, which are essential skills for staying on track with the various things I work on
