Opening advice

Moving to a different country or state, leaving your family, friends, home behind, leaving your life and being uprooted to a different place takes a lot of courage and determination. Pat on yourself on the back if you are living that life, planning it or even giving it a thought.

I understand how daunting it can be to imagine yourself in a different place which is not at first a home to you, it may be a new apartment, a shared accommodation, a student accommodation etc. I have gone through this phase and let me share some insight that might put your racing hearts at ease.

Finding and creating your own space

What is home? A simple answer is YOU. You make four walls and a roof home. You bring your style, essence, presence, scent, keepsakes and make it yours. Home is where you are. A building doesn’t happen overnight nor you, it takes time and patience.

It took me about five months to make my new room mine, to sigh at the known smell of my home and learn to embrace the comforting silence. It is definitely a beautiful journey to reinvent yourself too, so I would advise to welcome it with open heart.

Our university is so diversified and rich in culture where you can feel safe and welcomed. We have students from almost every place of the world.

Diversity at uni

We have numerous societies that will definitely interest everyone’s taste and you can find new friends there too. I am part of many societies and I have always met so many good people who indulge in good conversations over meetings. Society meets and get togethers are so fun and intellectual you will feel fulfilled at the end of the day.

There are always events happening around both LBU campuses by the student union and global village. These events gave me so many opportunities, friends and memories to cherish. Global village’s trips and chit chats are one of my favourite things to attend, all the people there and our officers are so fun and friendly that time goes by so fast. Student union and society events are also there, they celebrate all festivities so that students from every part of the world feel included and welcomed.

Making new friends

I understand the concept of walking up to someone and talking is sometimes hard, specially for introverts but I can assure you that everyone here I met so far are really friendly and polite. If that is not your cup of tea, you can always take part in Global village’s speed friending event.

It does take time to get used to the newness but once you learn to enjoy it, life becomes so beautiful. And the best part? You find yourself.
