Essential packing tips as an international student
Hello everyone I'm Iryn and studying in the UK as an international African student is a journey filled with both excitement and challenges. The transition from home to a new educational and cultural environment can be daunting, with academic demands, cultural differences, and social integration posing significant hesitancy. However, this enthralling experience offers unique opportunities for personal growth and broadening horizons.
Through my own escapades as a student in the UK, I learned that preparation is far-reaching. The decision to study abroad is high-stakes, and careful consideration of several factors is essential for success endeavours. Among the most critical aspect is packing the right items to ensure a smooth transition.
Doing prior research
Before departing for the UK, comprehensively and thoroughly research the climate, culture, and living conditions of the UK and by extension Leeds Beckett University. Have plenty of warm clothing, a rain jacket or strong umbrella, and appropriate footwear to cope with the unpredictable British weather patterns. As you will be coming either during winter season or about to get to winter season, you will likely need warm clothing.
As a newbie in the UK, I had never had experience with the winter season, therefore, I tried packing the following as my winter clothes: warm heavy jackets, warm hoodies, t-shirts, long-sleeved turtle necks/pull necks, heavy socks, sweat pants, jeans, to mention a few. For the shoes, I did pack few pairs of shoes; a couple of sneakers and boots, because I had in mind that I will be stocking up my shoe collection while in the UK.
Flight and luggage knowledge
While booking your flight, be mindful of baggage allowances; usually, you are only allowed 2 suitcases, each weighing up to 23kg. Ensure your carry-on luggage does not exceed 7kg or 10kg, but this can differ depending on airline rules and regulations. Packing can be tedious, but here are some tips to make it easier:
- Opt for suitcases that are lightweight when empty to maximize your packing capacity
- Fold your clothes into small compact pieces to save space
- Invest in packing cubes or compartment pouches to organize your clothes and maximize space.
Pack your important documents in your carry-on suitcase or backpack for easy access during check-in and take-off at the airport. Consider the academic requirements of your program: include university documents, stationery, textbooks, and a laptop to ensure you are well-prepared as you begin your new academic journey.
Packing things to remind you of home
Avoid packing food items as they will take up valuable space in your suitcases. In the UK, you will find markets stocked with a wide variety of African foods and other cuisines. However, you can bring along a few of your favourite African spices, tea bags, or anything that provides a sense of familiarity, belonging, and comfort while you're in the UK.
Navigating the social landscape can be challenging for newcomers in a new place. Pack items that help you feel connected to your home culture and identity, such as traditional clothing, accessories as well.
Remember health necessities, pack necessary medications and copies of important health records. Also don't forget to pack your transit documents such as: your passport, visa, and academic documents.
While the process of transitioning to life as an international student in the UK may seem daunting, with careful planning and a proactive mindset, it can also be an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience. The key is to approach the transition with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to embracing the unique opportunities that come with studying abroad.
