Exploring the city of Leeds - A guide for international students

Leeds, a vibrant and dynamic city in West Yorkshire, is a great place to explore. As an international student at Leeds Beckett University, you will find a wealth of activities and attractions to enjoy all year round. From historical landmarks to green spaces and cultural hotspots, Leeds is sure to leave you wanting more. My name is Linh Dan and I am going to show you some of the most popular places to visit in Leeds.

Roundhay Park

Roundhay Park is one of the largest city parks in Europe and is a must-visit in the summer. Covering over 700 acres, the park has beautiful lakes, swans, gardens and woodland. It is a great place for a picnic, a walk or just relaxing in the sun. The park also hosts many events and festivals, especially in the summer, so check the schedule when you visit.

How to get there: Buses 12, 2, 13, 13A from LBU
Address: Mansion Ln, Roundhay, Leeds LS8 2HH

Leeds Art Gallery

If you love art, Leeds Art Gallery is a must-visit. Located in the heart of the city, this museum houses an impressive collection of art from the 19th century to modern times. You will find outstanding paintings, sculptures and contemporary art from leading artists. Leeds Art Gallery regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, giving you the opportunity to explore a variety of art styles and schools. Additionally, with free entry, this is a great destination for students.

How to get there: 5 minute walk from LBU
Address: The Headrow, Leeds LS1 3AA

Leeds Corn Exchange

If you are looking for a place to hang out for 3-4 hours with friends during the summer, then try Leeds Corn Exchange - An architectural gem. Leeds Corn Exchange is a historic building that now houses independent shops where you can shop for clothes, souvenirs, cafes, restaurants and markets. It is a great place to find unique gifts, vintage fashion and artisanal food. Corn Exchange often hosts special events and markets, adding to the lively atmosphere. Especially in the summer you can join flea markets, events and many other entertainment activities.

Address: Call Ln, Leeds LS1 7BR

York

Can you believe it? I’ve been to York for the fourth time, in all four seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter in Leeds. Each trip has been a different experience, sometimes with friends, sometimes with family, and most recently with global ambassadors from Leeds Beckett University. A short train ride from Leeds, the historic city of York is the perfect destination for a day trip. Here you can visit the iconic York Minster, one of the largest Gothic cathedrals in Northern Europe, and explore the charming medieval streets of The Shambles. Oh, and don’t miss the Jorvik Viking Centre, where you can explore the city’s Viking heritage, and don’t miss the York City Walls, which offer great walks with loved ones and stunning views of the city. Here are some of my photos from York.

How to get there: Train ride approximately 60 minutes

Knaresborough

Just a short trip from Leeds, Knaresborough is a picturesque market town renowned for its natural beauty and historic sites. Visit the stunning Knaresborough Castle overlooking the River Nidd and take a relaxing boat ride along the river. The town is also famous for Mrs Shipton’s Cave, the birthplace of Britain’s most famous prophet, and the nearby Petrifying Well will leave you spellbound with its idyllic beauty and tranquillity.

Directions: Take the train for about 30 minutes

Looking back on my time here, Leeds is a city that really comes alive in every season but summer is probably the best, offering a rich mix of cultural, historical and outdoor experiences. As an international student at Leeds Beckett University, you have the perfect opportunity to explore all that the city and surrounding areas have to offer. Grab your sunglasses, wear comfortable shoes and make sure to explore Leeds in the summer!
