Tiled background

There are so many things to consider when choosing a university – it can be an overwhelming decision to make. It’s not as simple as going where your friends are going, or picking the first uni that offers your course; you’ll be spending the next 3 years there, so you want to choose somewhere that works for you and offers everything you need. Leeds Beckett one of the only universities to offer my course (their options are endless!) and the amazing support I got throughout the whole application process, the beautiful campus and the bustling surrounding city made the choice so much easier.

Academic excellence

If there’s one thing you can count on at Leeds Beckett, it’s that the tutors really know their stuff – and if they don’t, they’ll find out for you! On my course, all our tutors are professionals with years of industry experience, and most are actively working on the latest research as PhD candidates so we know we’re learning from the best. With over 100 courses across a wide range of subjects, there’s something for everyone, and many offer industry placements or professional accreditation, which look great on your CV.

State-of-the-art facilities

Leeds Beckett has so many facilities that it's hard to list them all! I've spent more time in the library than I'd like to admit, but I don’t mind—the open, comfortable study spaces and quick checkout system make it super convenient. The library staff are also really helpful - if you need a book or article you can’t find, they’ll request it for you which is so handy! The university is also home to world-class sporting facilities and has supported Olympic and Paralympic athletes, so if you're into fitness, it's definitely the place for you.

Vibrant campus life

Both City & Headingley campus have cosy cafés, perfect for laid-back study sessions during the colder months, and Headingley campus offers beautiful green spaces for summer lunch break picnics! It’s great having spots to relax with your course mates on campus, which really helped me build friendships in my first few months at uni. Leeds Beckett also offers a wide variety of clubs and communities, so no matter your interests you’re sure to find like-minded people to connect with. To learn more about the communities, just drop by the Freshers’ Fairs!

Support services

The support available at Leeds Beckett is second to none. As a disabled student, it’s something that’s really important to me and helped me get the most out of my time at uni. If you ever need advice on finances, accommodation, or anything else related to your university experience, there's always someone happy to help. For day-to-day questions, everyone is assigned an academic advisor to assist with any queries, and the university offers access to accredited counselling year-round, so there's always help when you need it.

Location in Leeds

Considered to be the best place to live in the North (Sunday Times, Mar 2024), Leeds doesn’t need much of an introduction. It’s got amazing transport links, loads of great independent shops and it’s the perfect city for foodies. It’s also home to interesting events throughout the year – my personal favourite is Light Night, the city’s illuminated immersive art trail – I visit every year without fail!

Strong industry connections

LBU has strong ties to the industries its courses are based in, with many offering placements and sandwich years to give students real-world experience. I’ve done two placements during my course, and they've been invaluable for seeing how teaching theory applies in real life—not to mention, they’ve been loads of fun! It's a fantastic way to gain hands-on experience, which looks great on your CV, provides material for assignments, and gives you the chance to meet industry professionals and make valuable connections.

Inclusive and diverse community

From my own experience as a disabled student, I’ve really felt the university’s commitment to inclusion and diversity. It’s not just a tagline—it’s reflected in the supportive communities and societies that truly celebrate differences and make everyone feel welcome. I’ve always felt free to be myself here, and it’s a place where no matter your background or needs, you’ll find understanding and a sense of belonging.

Innovative learning approaches

One of the things I’ve loved most about my course is how hands-on it is, even during lectures and seminars! You don’t have to be out on a placement to experience real-world approaches. At LBU, the dedicated tutors are passionate about teaching and make sure that every class feels relevant and practical. They bring real-world scenarios and industry insights directly into the classroom, so you’re constantly engaging with current practices and trends. This approach helps bridge the gap between theory and practice, making the learning experience much more dynamic and impactful.

Global opportunities

If you’re looking for a change of scenery during your time at LBU, many courses offer study abroad opportunities and summer exchange programs, which are a fantastic way to travel while you learn. For example, the education courses have a connection with a program in Romania that enables students to participate in a funded summer program teaching English to children and young people through engaging, interactive activities.

Value for money

Everybody knows that university can be expensive, but LBU really makes it feel worth it. Living costs in Leeds are relatively low compared to many major cities, and the support from your course team and the university is invaluable. The education you receive at LBU is truly world-class, and the tutors have a knack for rekindling your love of learning. It’s not just an expense—it’s an investment in your future. Plus, if you love it as much as I did and want to stay on for a Master’s, alumni get a 20% discount on tuition fees—a no-brainer!

Of course, there are thousands of universities around the world, and you need to pick the one that’s the perfect fit for you. But if you’re looking for world class teaching, top quality support and amazing student communities in a bustling city, then Leeds Beckett University is definitely the one for you.
