Learning and living in Leeds: A Chilean student’s perspective
This blog follows the journey of Ana, a Chilean student studying BA (Hons) Digital Marketing at Leeds Beckett University, and her experience of finding a welcoming community in Leeds.
I’ve always been a creative person who enjoys thinking outside the box, with a strong interest in communication, culture, and storytelling. Before moving to the UK, I worked in education and language teaching, where I became fascinated by how digital platforms are transforming the way people learn, connect, and engage. These platforms are no longer just sources of entertainment; they are powerful tools for brand positioning and audience connection. This curiosity naturally led me to digital marketing, a field that blends creativity, strategy, and technology to tell stories that inspire action.
I chose to study Digital Marketing at Leeds Beckett University because of its practical, future-focused approach and strong emphasis on real-world experience. The course combines academic knowledge with live projects involving both global and local brands, which was exactly what I was looking for. As an international student, it was equally important to study in a city that felt inclusive and welcoming, and Leeds quickly became a place I could call home.
As a self-funded international student, my journey has not been without challenges. Balancing full-time study, part-time work, financial pressure, and living far from my family has been demanding. However, Leeds Beckett has been more than just a place to study; it has been a space where I’ve been able to express myself, build confidence, and grow both personally and professionally. The university’s supportive and inclusive culture encouraged me to keep moving forward, even during difficult moments.
The course itself has been dynamic and insightful, striking a balance between creativity and data-driven decision-making. I’ve learned how to design digital campaigns, analyse audience behaviour, and optimise customer journeys, all while applying theory directly to practice. This hands-on approach has made learning feel relevant and empowering, allowing me to develop confidence in my skills while understanding the realities of the marketing industry.
Some of my most valuable learning experiences came from modules such as Content Marketing and Customer Journeys & Insights. In the Content Marketing module, I worked on a live brief for Leeds Film, helping design a campaign aimed at engaging younger audiences across platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube. A key highlight was pitching our campaign directly to the client, which strengthened my confidence in public speaking, teamwork, and professional communication. In Customer Journeys & Insights, I created a visual report analysing the Oxfam Online Shop’s customer journey and offered strategic recommendations to build customer loyalty. I also volunteered to support the LBU x Oxfam Pop-Up Shop by creating visual content and capturing student vox pops, extending my learning beyond the classroom.
Moving to the UK and settling into life in Leeds was both exciting and challenging. Adapting to a new culture, climate, and lifestyle took time, particularly during the long, cold winters that contrasted with the warmer climate I was used to. However, Leeds is a welcoming and vibrant city, and building routines and friendships, especially with other international students helped me feel settled. Those experiences taught me resilience, independence, and the importance of community.
Leeds Beckett has provided strong support throughout my journey. The Careers Centre played a vital role in preparing me for my placement year through CV reviews, interview preparation, and personalised guidance. The university also places a strong emphasis on wellbeing, offering counselling services and workshops that remind students that seeking help is a strength, not a weakness. Getting involved in the student community made a huge difference for me. Becoming a Global Ambassador allowed me to support new international students, help organise events such as Global Week and Welcome Weeks, and connect with people from around the world.
Looking ahead, I plan to undertake a placement year in marketing before completing my degree and graduating in 2027. After graduation, I aim to pursue a career in digital marketing, with a particular interest in brand storytelling, social media analytics, and using marketing to promote sustainability and positive change. Reflecting on my journey so far, Leeds Beckett has been an empowering environment that has helped shape the professional I am becoming and the future I am working toward.
