Enjoying the colder seasons in Leeds
Hi, I’m Seng San, a student of MSc Management and Marketing at Leeds Beckett University, originally from Myanmar. After a quiet summer, it is all systems go for the end of the year. From cozy cafés perfect for studying to exciting events that light up the city, Leeds has become a place I’ve come to love, especially during winter. In this blog, I’ll be sharing some of my favorite spots and upcoming events that make this time of year so special in Leeds.
Cozy hideaways and lively events come to life, creating an inviting atmosphere perfect for embracing the season. Whether you're seeking a café for quiet focus or bustling spots alive with the city's vibrant energy, there's something to delight everyone during these cooler months.
Leeds Light Night
Kicking off the autumn events in Leeds is Light Night, a spectacular celebration of art and light installations that illuminate the city’s landmarks. With stunning projections, interactive displays, and live performances, it’s an unmissable event that brings a little extra magic to those darker evenings. Light Night always leaves me in awe, and it's a great excuse to wrap up warm and explore the city streets at night.
Leeds International Film Festival
For film buffs, the Leeds International Film Festival is an annual highlight. Held in various locations across the city, including Hyde Park Picture House and Leeds Town Hall, it showcases a wide array of international cinema, indie films, and documentaries. Whether you’re into thought-provoking dramas or edge-of-your-seat thrillers, there’s something for every movie lover.
Leeds Christmas Market
The Leeds Christmas Markets bring a delightful touch of Germany to the UK with their authentic, German-inspired food and drink. This traditional festive market features an array of vendors offering holiday specialties, from bratwurst and pretzels to mulled wine and sweet treats, allowing visitors to indulge in the flavors of German Christmas traditions. With its charming decor, twinkling lights, and lively atmosphere, the market is a must-visit for those looking to experience a unique and delicious winter celebration in Leeds.
Halloween in Leeds
Embrace the spooky spirit of Leeds as you wrap up in your warmest coats, hats, scarves, and gloves for a thrilling lineup of chilling events throughout the city. Get ready for a Halloween filled with ghost walks, exhilarating shows, interactive workshops, and immersive experiences. With activities ranging from family-friendly frights ideal for half-term to genuinely terrifying tales for adults, there’s something to delight everyone this Halloween!
Some of my favorite haunts include Temple of Boom’s annual Halloween party and spooky film nights at the Hyde Park Picture House.
Experience A Splash of Colour in Roundhay Park
Roundhay Park is the ideal spot to witness the stunning transformation of the season, as autumn paints the landscape in vibrant reds and golden yellows. There’s something truly enchanting about this time of year, with nature at its most beautiful. Pack a cozy blanket, a good book, and perhaps a picnic featuring some delicious treats. It’s the perfect autumn retreat!
Live music or work and unwind
If live music, pizza, and a laid-back vibe sound like your thing, Belgrave Music Hall is a fantastic spot to spend chilly evenings. With its intimate gigs, eclectic line-up of DJs, and rooftop views, it’s a great place to spend time with friends or discover new music.
Whether you’re after quiet moments in a serene café, want to soak up the festive cheer, or dive into the vibrant Leeds nightlife, autumn and winter in the city have so much to offer. You’ve heard of bar crawls, but how about trying a coffee or hot chocolate crawl? Here are some top spots to savor a cozy cup as you explore the city.
Start your coffee crawl at Laynes Espresso, just off New Station Street near the train station, where expertly brewed coffee is a favorite among locals. Then, head to Mrs. Atha’s on Boar Lane for a cozy cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the heart of the city. Next, make your way to Opposite Café on Kirkgate, near the Victoria Quarter, where you can enjoy international coffee blends paired with a delightful brownie. Finally, for a warm, welcoming spot, visit Global Tribe Café on Swan Street, close to the City Varieties Music Hall
As we embrace the cozy charm of autumn and winter in Leeds, I encourage everyone to explore the vibrant events, festive markets, and inviting cafés that make this city truly special during the colder months—so wrap up warm, grab your favorite hot drink, and get ready for an unforgettable season filled with magic and joy!
