What you should look for during an Open Day
Hi, I’m Issy, a third year Psychology student at Leeds Beckett. Open Days provide us with an insight into what a university has to offer, from wellbeing resources to elective module options. Within this blog I will be discussing what you should look out for on an Open Day to ensure you make the right decision for you!
Information about your course
Why ask questions about your course? Because understanding the modules, assessment methods, and teaching styles will help you figure out whether the course aligns with your learning style and future goals. It’s not just about what you’ll be studying, but how you’ll be studying it—and that can make all the difference! For me, the elective modules offered by each university were a key factor in deciding where to study.
I say this as someone who was always nervous to put my hand up. Trust me, asking about your course, especially how you'll be assessed, will really help you get the most out of your visit.
Also, don’t forget to check out the career support and study abroad options. Whether it’s work placements, internships, or grad jobs, exploring these options is crucial. I found Leeds Beckett’s Careers Team incredibly helpful when I was considering my next steps, as they offered insights into potential career paths, explained how to make the most of university resources, and highlighted opportunities for networking that could benefit me as a future student.
Facilities available on campus
It’s important to check out the atmosphere and accessibility of campus facilities, such as libraries, lab spaces, and classrooms. Are they spacious? Do they have the equipment you’ll need? Are they easy to access? By doing this, you’re not just helping your future self get familiar with the campus; you can also compare different university spaces to determine which one suits you best!
At Leeds Beckett, I find it incredibly helpful that both the City and Headingley campuses offer accessible library spaces. I can use the City library when I have lectures and seminars, and then switch to the Headingley library during half-term breaks and non-timetabled hours since my student house is closer to that one!
Accommodation and social spaces
Make sure to explore potential housing options. Are they affordable? Are they conveniently located near key areas, like the university? It was a priority for me to visit the accommodation my on Open Day, and I stayed at Marsden House in Burley, which made my first-year experience truly memorable!
During the Open Day, you’ll find plenty of current students on campus—be sure to ask them about their experiences at the university. This will give you a more personal perspective beyond just the academic side. Current students can provide honest insights into social life, living conditions, and the workload you can expect. They can also recommend which accommodations fit the vibe you're looking for and share some hotspots around the city!
Student support services
Moving away from home can come with its challenges, and it’s completely normal to feel a mix of emotions. That’s why it's great to know that student support services are there to help! These services offer valuable resources, including mental health support and financial assistance. You never know when you might need a helping hand, so make sure to explore what welfare services the university provides during your Open Day.
Atmosphere and vibe of the university
It’s important to use the Open Day to truly immerse yourself in the overall vibe of the university. Trust me when I say that when you know it’s the right place for you, you’ll feel it in your gut! Can you picture yourself living and studying there? Does the university align with your expectations and aspirations?
For me, Leeds Beckett was always on my radar as a potential option. However, it was during the Open Day that I truly felt a sense of belonging. Engaging with the community and exploring the campus helped solidify my decision to attend, and I knew it was the right fit for me!
By following these tips and advice, you'll leave your Open Day with a clear understanding of whether the university meets your needs and is the right fit for you. You'll also be able to compare institutions to ensure you get the most out of your higher education experience! I’m wishing you all the best and good luck on your search!
