Christmas Away from Home: Crafting Festive Memories
I'm Saritha and as an Indian international student studying in Leeds, UK, celebrating Christmas away from home is an emotional mix of excitement and nostalgia. Back home in India, Christmas wasn’t a big part of my cultural landscape, but it always felt special—a time to gather with friends, indulge in festive food, and soak in the holiday cheer in our own way.
Last year, I sought that Christmas magic in Edinburgh, spending four memorable days amidst its enchanting markets and historic streets. But this year, I’ve decided to stay in Leeds, embracing the challenge of making the holiday season feel like home. And trust me, it’s shaping up to be just as magical.
The Leeds Christmas Market: A Taste of Festive Magic
One of the first things that pulled me into the Christmas spirit this year was the Leeds Christmas Market at Millennium Square. The festive atmosphere is contagious—twinkling fairy lights, the aroma of hot chocolate, and the cheerful hum of carol singers make it impossible not to feel the holiday joy.
Strolling through the market with friends, I discovered unique handmade gifts, indulged in hot chocolate (with extra marshmallows, of course), and even tried a bratwurst for the first time. It’s become a weekly ritual—a little escape from coursework and a reminder that Leeds, with its multicultural vibrance, is my home for now.
Baking Christmas Cake: A New Tradition
Back in India, Christmas cakes are a tradition in many households, even if you’re not Christian. The rich, spiced plumcake brings back memories of bakeries filled with the scent of cinnamon, cloves, and dried fruits soaked in rum.
This year, I decided to take on the challenge of baking my own Christmas cake with friends. It was messy, chaotic, and filled with laughter—exactly how traditions should begin. As we mixed the ingredients and waited for the cake to bake, the smell filled our apartment, transforming it into a cozy little corner of the world that felt like home.
Decorating the Christmas Tree: A Symbol of New Beginnings
Putting up a Christmas tree wasn’t something I did back home, but it’s a tradition I’ve fully embraced here. This year, I bought a small tree and decorated it with fairy lights and baubles, each ornament a reminder that I’m building new memories.
There’s something magical about turning on the lights for the first time and seeing the tree glow in the corner of my room. It’s a simple act, but it fills the space with warmth and a sense of belonging.
Shopping and Exploring Leeds
One of my favourite parts of the holiday season in Leeds has been the shopping. From Trinity Leeds to the charming independent stores in the Corn Exchange, there’s no shortage of places to find gifts for friends (and maybe a little something for myself).
Walking through the city, with its festive lights and bustling streets, I’ve discovered a side of Leeds I hadn’t noticed before. It’s a city that comes alive during Christmas, and being part of it has made me feel like I belong here.
Finding Family in Friendship
For international students like me, friends become family during the holidays. We may come from different countries and backgrounds, but we share the experience of being far from home.
This year, my friends and I have planned a cozy Christmas Eve—cooking a meal that blends our cultures, exchanging small gifts, and watching Christmas movies late into the night. It’s these moments that remind me that home isn’t a place; it’s the people you share it with.
Embracing the Joy of Being Away
Spending Christmas away from home can be challenging, but it’s also an opportunity to create new traditions, explore new cultures, and discover new parts of yourself. Leeds has given me that chance, and I’m embracing it with open arms.
So, to anyone spending the holidays away from home: Remember that home is where you choose to make it. Bake that cake, put up that tree, explore your city, and surround yourself with friends who make you feel loved.
This Christmas, Leeds is my home, and I’m excited to see what memories I’ll create here. And who knows? Maybe one day, I’ll look back at this time as the start of a new tradition—a tradition of finding joy, wherever life takes me.
Happy Holidays to all!
