Christmas in another country
Hey everyone, my name is Jessie and today I'm going to talk about what it's like to spend Christmas away from your home country.
The festive season is upon us, and the student community is divided into two sections: those readying themselves for the holiday, either to enjoy time with their families or going back to their homes, and those preparing for the upcoming tests and exams. I find myself in the latter category. This year marks my first Christmas spent away from home, and I'm excited to experience it in a country that actually celebrates the occasion.
While my friends are finishing their exams, buying gifts, and packing for their trips, I feel more at ease since I do not have any travel plans.
Initially, the idea of spending Christmas away from my family felt daunting, especially during a time when we often need the warmth of loved ones. However, I reasoned that staying behind—even alone—might allow me to explore the city and experience the authentic Christmas spirit I have heard so much about. Also, with ticket prices being high and a deadline looming in early January, it makes sense for me to stay.
You're not alone
This sentiment is shared by many international students. Instead of spending all their time studying, consider taking some time off with friends who are also staying here to:
Explore the city: Leeds during the Christmas season is truly magical. We’ve already caught a glimpse of it with the Christmas Market and beautiful decorations. I believe experiencing the city on the actual day will be even more worthwhile. Also, I’m open to immerse myself in local traditions, from attending carol services to enjoying traditional Christmas dinners, and even learning how immigrants celebrate. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet people and discover cool writing material. Yes, I’m always working—in my head.
Indulge the food scene: Numerous restaurants, tea shops, and pubs offer great discounts and special Christmas meal deals for students to enjoy. For instance, Slug and Lettuce on Boar Lane offers everything from 25% off food to £25 for Bottomless Brunch. These deals are too good to miss! Also, Franco Manca Pizza offers a four-course set menu for £25, along with many more exciting deals available through the MiXR App with a valid student card.
Join community activities: There will definitely be activities planned for those staying during the holidays. Expect food and plenty of fun! Be sure to keep an eye out for notifications about these events to help you feel less lonely.
That’s what I plan to do in Leeds, but if you want to explore elsewhere, I’ve heard that cities around the UK, like Manchester and London, have great food and Christmas scenes. Or, if you want to broaden your horizons, visit other European countries—it would be magical this time of year.
If You Prefer to Stay Home
I understand that the chaotic, bustling atmosphere of the holiday season may not be for everyone. If that’s the case, staying home can be perfectly enjoyable. I won’t spend my entire holiday hustling around town from one pub to another; I’ll also be enjoying time at home. Besides writing furiously to finish my screenplays, I’ll be:
Hosing a movie marathon: If you’re looking for movie recommendations for the holiday season, you’ve come to the right person! Classics like Home Alone, Elf, The Nightmare Before Christmas (though it feels more suited for Halloween), The Grinch, and The Holiday are timeless favourites. For something a bit unconventional, consider Die Hard (a debatable Christmas movie), Happiest Season, Carol, or even Eyes Wide Shut.
Cooking & Baking: Yes, I’ll be cooking and baking (if my rusty skills allow!) this holiday season because why not? Homemade cookies and hot chocolate sound like a treat! The possibilities are endless, so get creative in the kitchen.
Prioritizing self-care: The holidays are a perfect time to pause and enjoy the spirit of the season from the comfort of your home. Consider indulging in at-home spa treatments like face masks or hair masks, or simply cosying up in a blanket with a good book or movie.
Journaling: The year’s end is an excellent time for reflection. Consider what you’ve learned and what you want to change in the coming year. This is a practice I’ve maintained for years, and I won't skip it just because I'm far from home—and neither should you.
Staying connected with family: Even a video call counts. I’ll definitely call my family during this time to catch up.
The most important thing is to find ways to enjoy yourself and make the most of the holiday season. Even if you're thousands of miles away from home, you can create your own home away from home.
Or you can just call me, as I’m here for the holiday and writing!
Jessie
Hello, I’m Jessie. I’m an international student from Vietnam currently studying MA Screenwriting. As you might expect given my field of study, I love writing, reading, watching films, and discussing them afterward. I also enjoy exploring different cultures and their food scenes, traveling, and watching tennis, and now that I think about it, I should probably take up more hobbies!
