Everything you need to know about a Postgraduate Open Day

Hi, my name is Zain and I am currently studying for an MA in Sports Development and Management. Are you considering a postgraduate degree at Leeds Beckett University? Attending a Postgraduate Open Day is one of the best ways to explore your options, get a feel for the campus, and gather all the essential information you need. Here’s everything you need to know before you go!

PG Open Day

What is a Postgraduate Open Day?

A Postgraduate Open Day at Leeds Beckett is the perfect opportunity for prospective master's, PhD, PGCert, and PGDip students to explore the campus, connect with faculty members, and gain a deeper understanding of the courses on offer. These events provide insights into postgraduate student life, academic support, funding options, and career prospects.

Having completed my undergraduate degree at Leeds Beckett, I found myself at a crossroads, unsure of which postgraduate path to take. I attended Open Days at universities across the country, considering various courses, yet nothing quite matched the opportunities, support, and sense of community that Leeds Beckett offered me. Despite already knowing the city well, experiencing the university through a fresh postgraduate lens reaffirmed that this was the right place for me.

When and where do they take place?

Leeds Beckett hosts Postgraduate Open Days at both its City and Headingley campuses, offering a great opportunity to explore the university, meet lecturers, and get a real feel for student life.

When I was considering my postgraduate options, I remember feeling a mix of excitement and uncertainty. As I’d already studied at Leeds Beckett as an undergraduate, part of me wondered if I should explore somewhere new. But attending the Open Day completely reaffirmed my decision. Speaking to staff, touring the facilities, and even chatting with other prospective students made me realise that Leeds Beckett still had everything I was looking for — and more.

What to expect on the day

Attending a  Postgraduate Open Day isn’t just about visiting the campus — it’s about discovering what life as a postgraduate student could really be like. From chatting with lecturers to exploring study spaces, the event is packed with opportunities to help you make an informed decision. Here’s what you can expect:

- Course-specific talks & Q&A sessions – Get the insights on your chosen course, meet the academic staff who’ll be guiding you through your studies, and ask all those questions about modules, assessments, and research opportunities. I found these sessions invaluable when narrowing down my options!

- Campus tours – Walk through the libraries, study areas, and sports facilities, soaking up the atmosphere and picturing yourself here. As a sports student, seeing the training spaces in person helped me visualise how I’d balance my studies with my passion for sport.

- Funding & scholarships advice – Let’s be honest—postgraduate study is an investment, so getting advice on tuition fees, scholarships, and loan options is key. The finance team at Leeds Beckett made everything feel much more manageable when I attended!

- Student support services – Postgraduate study is a big step, and knowing what support is available — from career guidance to mental health resources — can make all the difference.

- Networking opportunities – One of the best parts of an Open Day is meeting current students and alumni. Hearing their real experiences gave me a much better idea of what to expect, from workload management to the social side of postgrad life.

If you’re anything like me, seeing everything first-hand will help make your decision feel a lot clearer. So, make the most of the event — ask questions, take it all in, and most importantly, imagine yourself here!

My top tips for making the most of your visit

To make the most of your Postgraduate Open Day at Leeds Beckett, here are a few tips I found really helpful when I was in your shoes:

- Register in advance – All Open Days require booking, so secure your spot early!

- Plan your time – Take a look at the schedule beforehand and prioritise the sessions that matter most to you. Whether it’s course talks, campus tours, or funding advice, having a plan will help you make the most of your time.

- Prepare questions – This is your chance to get answers straight from the experts, so don’t hold back! Even as an existing Leeds Beckett student I had a whole list of questions about modules, career prospects, and even what the workload was really like. No question is too big or too small — if it matters to you, ask!

- Take notes & photos – After visiting a few universities, everything can start to blur together. Jotting down key points and snapping a few pictures will help you remember what stood out to you when making your final decision.

- Explore the city – Leeds is an amazing place to be a student, with a buzzing social scene, great food spots, and plenty to do. If you’re new to the area, take some time to check out Headingley and the city centre — you’ll quickly see why we love it here!

Most importantly, enjoy the experience! Open Days are all about getting a feel for the university and seeing if it’s the right fit for you. So take it all in, chat with people, and picture yourself studying at Leeds Beckett — you might just find it feels like home.
