The benefits of attending a Postgraduate Open Day

Hi, my name is Zain and I am currently studying an MA in Sports Development and Management at Leeds Beckett. If you're considering furthering your education with a postgraduate degree, attending an Open Day could be one of the most valuable steps in your decision-making process. Whether you're exploring master's programs, PhDs, or professional qualifications, a Postgraduate Open Day offers insights that websites simply cannot provide. Here’s why you should make time to attend one!

Graduation

Get a feel for the facilities and people at Headingley & City Campus

Studying at a postgraduate level often involves extensive research, collaboration, and independent work. Visiting Leeds Beckett in person allows you to explore the facilities, libraries, laboratories, and study spaces to ensure they meet your needs. A virtual tour might be an option, but nothing beats experiencing the atmosphere in real life!

As a sports student and a massive rugby union fan, one of my top priorities was checking out the sports facilities. I wanted to know what the teams were like, where I could train, and what kind of support was available for athletes. Walking through Headingley Campus and seeing the state-of-the-art gyms, pitches, and indoor courts made me feel excited about the possibilities. It was also great to see the different classroom environments – from seminar rooms to lecture theatres – which gave me a real sense of what studying here would be like.

One of the biggest benefits of attending an Open Day is meeting the people who could shape your postgraduate experience. Speaking to the teaching teams and lecturers gave me the chance to ask in-depth questions about course content, research opportunities, and academic expectations. Building these relationships early can be hugely beneficial when it comes to applying for a place or securing funding – plus, it helps you decide if the course is the right fit for you.

Just as important is talking to current students. They offer an honest perspective on what it’s really like to study at postgraduate level. At my Open Day, I had some great chats with students who gave me insights into workload management, balancing studies with part-time work, and the social side of postgraduate life. Everyone’s experience is different, and hearing multiple viewpoints helped me picture what my own day-to-day routine might look like.

Understanding the admissions process and funding options

Postgraduate applications can be complex, with different universities having varying requirements. If you're considering multiple institutions, attending Open Days helps you make direct comparisons. You can assess teaching styles, facilities, and course structures to determine which institution aligns best with your academic and career aspirations.

For me, one of the key reasons for choosing Leeds Beckett was the assessment structure. I preferred a mix of essay writing, presentations, and practical exams rather than timed written papers. I’ve always found I perform better when I can present my findings in a range of formats rather than relying solely on one final exam.

Funding was another big consideration, and Open Days often include sessions on scholarships, loans, and financial support. I’ll admit, the financial side of postgraduate study can feel daunting, but attending an Open Day gave me the information I needed to plan ahead. The team at Leeds Beckett were really helpful in breaking down the options, which made the whole process feel much more manageable.

Creating and discovering new networking opportunities

A postgraduate qualification is a significant investment in your future, so understanding its career benefits is important. Some courses even require you to complete a placement as part of your studies. If that’s the case, it’s worth getting a head start by speaking to industry professionals at the Open Day – once you start your course, time seems to slip away!

At my Open Day, I met a few alumni who had transitioned from their studies into careers within Sports Development. Hearing their success stories made a huge difference in solidifying my decision. It also helped me realise the importance of making connections early – you never know who might help you land your dream job in the future.

This is your sign to go to the next Postgraduate Open Day!

A Postgraduate Open Day is more than just a campus visit. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in the academic environment, connect with key individuals, and make informed decisions about your future. If you’re serious about advancing your education, attending one is a step you won’t regret.
